Yesterday, someone I know asked if I would join him and several other people in a group order of food from the legacy restaurant Katz’s Delicatessen. They were planning on ordering some delicious corned beef – the kind that’s soaked in brine for weeks and has that melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. I told him I would look over the menu
So today, I’m placing my order. I’ll get a pound of corned beef, along with Katz’s homemade mustard, their homemade Russian dressing, and maybe even a bag of New York bagels.
Because March 17th is just around the corner, and you know that corned beef is a staple on St. Patrick’s Day.
As for me, it’s a staple and a reminder of my Jewish heritage.
As a kid, I lived with my Grandma Betty in Boston during the summer, when my toxic home life in Albany was too much to bear. There were plenty of delicious foods available at Grandma Betty’s, and she would often get some of the best delicacies on Sunday when she visited a Brookline grocery store called the Butcherie. Mouth-watering corned beef, turkey soup (with alphabet noodles), chewy Boston bagels, you couldn’t go wrong.
She would take some corned beef, add a dollop of spicy mustard, and place it in a sliced bagel. Warmed it up in her little toaster oven, and it was like eating the word of God. So delicious.
Even during that one year when I actually spent half a school term living with Grandma Betty (attending Patrick F. Lyndon Elementary School in West Roxbury, School #5 of The Twelve), there were corned beef sandwiches and other treats from the Butcherie in my school lunch box. This was important. It wasn’t just a slapped-together PB&J on white bread. This was a delicacy.
And trust me, you can’t get that kind of corned beef here in Albany. Oh you can get corned beef, but it isn’t the same as you would find in New York City or in Boston.
Example. A few years ago, when I was in Boston for Geek Bowl XII, I found that my hotel was near a Jewish delicatessen. And sure enough, they had corned beef available. So I ordered one – corned beef with spicy mustard on rye bread. And a Diet Moxie to go with it.
Which reminds me … I need to get some Diet Moxie as well. And since none of the stores around here sell Moxie …
I’m thinking Amazon might have a few cans or bottles available. 🙂
It goes great with Jewish corned beef.
