An angel once told me that a very special Oriental king made the first butterfly.
This supremely talented artisan simply collected a dozen slivers of balsa, some sturdy rice paper and his finest, most vivid paints.
Two days later, the king held that beautiful miniature “kite” in the palm of his regal right hand. Then, he gently blew on it–whereupon, the world’s most beloved insect rose and fluttered away.
“But how could a mere man create life?” I asked the eight-foot messenger.
With much patience displayed in his huge blue eyes, the angel replied, “Butterflies live only because humans think it so.”
I did not know what he meant, then; I do not know, still.
Suddenly, an elongated, wormlike larva appeared in my mind’s eye. “But what about the caterpilar!” I inadvertently blurted.
The Heavenly being startled me by snapping back: “Who in blazes would want to take credit for that!”
This time, I was pretty sure I knew what he meant.
