Laugh if you want, but five of these fifteen performing acts will be in the Class of 2011 in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Your potential inductees are, in alphabetical order:
- The Beastie Boys
- Bon Jovi
- Chic
- Alice Cooper
- Neil Diamond
- Dr. John
- Donovan
- J. Geils Band
- LL Cool J
- Darlene Love
- Laura Nyro
- Donna Summer
- Joe Tex
- Tom Waits
- Chuck Willis
Right off the bat, I’m cheezed off.ย Once again, the Rock Hall has seen it fit to ignore such fantastic and legendary acts as the Moody Blues, the Guess Who, Styx, Boston, Joy Division, Slade, The Specials, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Skatalites – producers like Joe Meek, Brian Eno, Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare – and influences like Robert Moog and Cousin Brucie and Wolfman Jack and Dr. Demento are left off the list once again.ย Geez.
So let me do a little handicapping.ย Figure that five out of these fifteen will be in the Class of 2011.ย So how would I handicap this race?
THE BEASTIE BOYS – Classic rap trio that opened rap up to whole new audiences.ย Took the genre in previously unexplored directions.
PRO – Evolved their craft from “You Gotta Fight For Your Right to Party” to more intricate and detailed rap tracks like “Intergalactic” and “Hey Ladies” and “Check It Out.”
CON – It’s them against LL Cool J.ย Five slots available for induction.ย You think the Rock Hall will put them both in?ย Maybe if the voters don’t recall they did a song called “Cookiepuss…”
CHANCES – Decent.ย Maybe not first ballot, but they’ll get in someday.
BON JOVI – The best-selling New Jersey musical act not named Sinatra or Springsteen.
PRO – They’re freakin’ Bon Jovi, man!ย “You Give Love a Bad Name!” “Living on a Prayer!” “Runaway!” “It’s My Life!”
CON – Please don’t let Jon Bon Jovi show up at the inductions wearing a Philadelphia Soul Arena Football jersey… please…
CHANCES – They’re in.ย Without question.
CHIC – The quintet that brought a liquid bass line to two of the best songs of the late 70’s, “Le Freak” and “Good Times.”ย Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards later produced several monster hits for other artists, and were part of the group Power Station.
PRO – “Good Times” has been sampled by a thousand rap artists, and “Le Freak” is still a radio staple.
CON – They’re a two-hit wonder.ย Three if you even remember “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah).”ย Chic and Donna Summer are the two disco acts among the 15 balloteers.
CHANCES – Not this year.
ALICE COOPER – The master of 70’s shock rock.ย “Welcome To My Nightmare.”ย “School’s Out.” “Eighteen.”ย He’s a legend.
PRO – Not only did this guy put out some classic rock tunes, he also had one of the most poignant anti-spousal-abuse songs out there in “Only Women.”
CON – As long as they don’t count his other treacly ballads like “You and Me” and “See Me Now” and “I Never Cry,” he’s a lock.
CHANCES – Very strong.
NEIL DIAMOND – Singer-songwriter from the 1960’s to today.
PRO – His songs have been performed by everyone from the Monkees to UB40.
CON – How in God’s name can you put Neil Diamond in any Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when his catalog includes “Forever in Blue Jeans,” “Love on the Rocks,” “September Morn” and “Song Sung Blue”?
CHANCES – Please God, no.
DR. JOHN – A legendary singer-songwriter.ย Mixed zydeco with rock music and created some fantastic albums.
PRO – “In the Right Place” defines New Orleans funk music.
CON – How many of you out there actually OWN a Dr. John album?ย Anyone?ย Bueller?ย Bueller?
CHANCES – Not this year.
DONOVAN – A massive catalog of psychedelic pop hits.ย He’s part of the 1960’s British Invasion.
PRO – Most of his songs, including “Mellow Yellow,” “Sunshine Superman,” and “Catch the Wind,” are still getting monster airplay on oldies stations.
CON – He should have gotten into the Rock Hall a few years ago.
CHANCES – First ballot.
J. GEILS BAND – One of New England’s greatest rock band of the 70’s and 80’s.ย Their live shows are still talked about today.
PRO – Their hits included “Centerfold,” “Must of Got Lost,” “Freeze Frame” and “Angel in Blue.”
CON – Okay, if you took the “Freeze Frame” album away, could you have named another J. Geils Band song without running to iTunes?
CHANCES – Would like to see it, but it’s a longshot at best.
LL COOL J – Rapper extraordinaire.ย A whole collection of smooth hits and solid raps.
PRO – Grandmaster Flash and Run-D.M.C. opened the doors for rappers in the Rock Hall.ย Here’s a chance for a solo rapper to get in.
CON – It’s him or the Beastie Boys.ย You think the Hall’s going to put two rap inductees in with only five available entries?
CHANCES – Good.
DARLENE LOVE – One of the essential voices on the Phil Spector collection of hits.
PRO – The Ronettes were the first of the “Phil Spector” groups to get in the Rock Hall, so next up should be Darlene Love – and then next year, how about the Crystals?
CON – Several of her songs are credited to the Crystals, even though she wasn’t a member of the group. Nice to see Phil Spector playing fast and loose with lineups.
CHANCES – Should have gotten in last year.
LAURA NYRO – prolific songwriter, provided hits for the 5th Dimension, Three Dog Night and Peter Paul & Mary.
PRO – Brill Building songwriters are sorely underrepresented at the Rock Hall.
CON – Known more as a songwriter than as a singer, that may dissuade some voters.ย She’s on a ballot with Neil Diamond and Tom Waits, that might split the vote.
CHANCES – Might take a ballot or two.
DONNA SUMMER – Queen of disco music.ย Consistent chart hits from 1976 to 1991.
PRO – Transcended the vapid disco orchestrations.ย Fantastic voice.ย Girl once held a note for 16 solid seconds on the song “Dim All The Lights.”ย You try doing that.
CON – Once you start inducting disco acts, who’s next?ย KC and the Sunshine Band?ย Santa Esmerelda?ย Boney M?
CHANCES – Not this year.
JOE TEX – Fantastic soul/R&B singer and performer.
PRO – Major R&B hits with “I Gotcha” and “I Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fatย Woman).”
CON – I can’t think of any.
CHANCES – Good.ย He deserves to be in.
TOM WAITS – Singer, songwriter, actor.ย His albums are full of legendary imagery.ย His songs have been covered by the Eagles, Rod Stewart and Manhattan Transfer.
PRO – Get you a copy of “Heart Attack and Vine” or “Swordfishtrombones” and your mind will be expanded.
CON – His voice rivals Bob Dylan’s as an acquired taste.
CHANCES – Doubtful.
CHUCK WILLIS – 50’s R&B singer, the King of “The Stroll,” had hits like “C.C. Rider,” “What am I Living For,” and “Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes.”
PRO – A legend of R&B music of the 1950’s.
CON – Modern generations don’t even know his name.ย His songs aren’t played on the radio, and if you do hear “C.C. Rider,” it’s usually the Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels version.
CHANCES – Wish he could get in, but it won’t be this year.
So with that in mind, my vote would include Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Donovan, Darlene Love and a coinflip between LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys – LL Cool J won the coin flip.ย I’d also put in a few votes for Dr. John, Joe Tex and Chuck Willis, but they’re longshots at best.ย As forย Neil Diamond – come on, man…
Now let me ask you – who would you vote for from the fifteen names listed above, who do you think should never get a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ticket, let alone an induction – and are there artists / groups / performers that have still received short shrift?
Jon Bon Jovi will not show up at the awards ceremony in a Soul jersey. He knows how to dress appropriately for every event he goes too and yes….they ARE freakin’ Bon Jovi, man!!!!

It has long been obvious that the standards for this show are not very high.
However, one cannot overstate the contributions that Tom Waits has made and the influence he has had on many sitting members.
He’ll be in for sure, without question.

Whats so bad about Neil Diamond? I saw him at the TU center and he put on a great show. Alot better then some of the modern rock bands bands i’ve seen lately.

My vote goes to:
Beastie Boys-they’re aren’t just rappers and hip hoppers, they’re punk rockers and I don’t think LL has managed to infuse one Led Zepplin dub into his catalog. Enough said.
Donovan-his music is ethereal and dreamy and I heart him. Period.
Tom Waits-who cares if he can’t sing? Neither could Leonard Cohen but he’s still a legend! If Tom doesn’t win than god truly is away on business. ๐
There’s not another artist on this list that truly inspires me enough to give them rock god status. Sorry folks!

Chic is underrated.
Beastie Boys are overrated.
LL Cool J has to get in.
Superstar in hip hop.
Hitmaker and sex symbol, not a great lyricist.
Bon Jovi should get in.
Someone talked up Kiss recently.
Kiss, probably.
Joe Tex has been sampled by hip hop artists.

My list:
Beastie boys (agreed that it won’t be this year but a guy can hope)
Bon Jovi is in, no way they can not get in
Alice Cooper if only for his appearance in Wayne’s World
Donna Summers to show other type of music in the hall
Tom Waits probably not going to happen but again a guy can hope
Neil Diamond will most likely get in if not this year than later. Same with J Geils Band.

Sly and Robbie should never get in.
They made a record with Willie D from BDP and he ended their careers.

Chuck you’re just as bad as the Hall if you can’t see how a band like Rush isn’t in the Hall. They have all the ingredients of what the HOF was suppose to be about; influence, integrity, longevity, record sales (hate to admit it), what else do they have to do? Not be Canadian I guess.

That’s the argument I made for the Guess Who not getting in. But Rush and Yes and all the other art rock and prog rock groups are going to keep getting stiffed. I hope one of them breaks through.

Kiss wasn’t nominated this year. They were nominated last year and didn’t get in. I think it’s going to take Alice Cooper getting in before a theatrical rock band like Kiss gets in the door.

Rush? Did anyone see the recent documentary that included all the bands and musicians who Rush inspired? And let’s give it up to a band that can still put on 3 hour shows as they approach their sixties.

Why the hating on Neil Diamond? The guy was putting out music long before I was born. Better him than the Beastie Boys (who I grew up listening to).
The only negative to Neil Diamond is that “Sweet Caroline” is basically the anthem for the Red Sox. Definite point deductions!

When I was in 5th grade (okay I don’t even remember the year) I had to take a dance class where we learned the fox trot, waltz and cha-cha. We had to wear white gloves. The teacher used to play one (what he thought was) “rock and roll song” to appease us.
It was “Cracklin’ Rosie” by Neil Diamond.
Even in 5th grade over 30, ( actually 40!) years ago we made fun of it!

Donovan & Alice should go.
I agree with you on Slade, but I also agree with Paul Shaffer and Little Steven and would add Paul Revere & The Raiders. Regardless of their costumes and dance steps they were a rock band of the first order. “Kicks”, “Hungry”, “Good Thing”, “Let Me”, “Too Much Talk”. Just to name but a few.

There is no other band that is more deserving to be inducted than RUSH. It’s laughable that they have never even been considered let alone be on the ballot. No other band has influenced more musicians/bands, have won countless awards for their musicianship, still put out relevant music after 35 yrs together (with the same line up) and are tremendous citizens. Oh yeah, they also have more gold records than any other band in history behind only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
The Hall of Shame is a joke regarding some of the bands already inducted….Blondie? yeah ok…..among a host of other irrelevant artists (see their list of inductees). Now they want to add J Geils, Donna Summer? Really? The fact that Kiss nor Yes (among others) haven’t gotten in yet is absurd.
Also, a few of Chuck Summers’ suggestions are also ridiculous….Depeche Mode? How are they relevant exactly? What have they contributed to the music industry.

Waits will absolutely (and rightfully) get in! He’s one of the few “off the beaten path” artists that pretty much everyone in the industry – and especially voters – are keen to.
Also, shocked and a bit appalled at your distaste for Neil Diamond. The guy’s one of the best and most beloved songwriters of the 20th Century. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Gene Simmons pretty much sums up why the R&R HOF is a joke:
“There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not Kiss,” the band’s outspoken frontman said during a speech at the Billboard Touring Conference on Thursday. “I believe we have more gold records in America than any other group, but it’s OK.”
Simmons also took a dig at the top officials at the hall of fame’s foundation, which is chaired by Rolling Stone magazine publisher Jann Wenner.
“A lot of those guys on the board can go and get my sandwich when I want, and I mean that in the nicest way,” he said.
I have one other word to add:
RUSH
(No, not Limbaugh. Lee, Lifeson, and Peart)

That eliminates:

Out of the reamining nominees, these are CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR:
โขDr. John
โขDonovan
โขDarlene Love
โขLaura Nyro
โขTom Waits
โขChuck Willis
The following are UNWORTHY, period:
– Bon Jovi
– Donna Summer
– Chic
That leaves the following as the WORTHY recipients from the nominees:
– J Geils Band
– Alice Cooper
– Joe Tex
The two open slots should go to various acts NOT NOMINATED, BUT SHOULD BE. That list includes:
– Gram Parsons
– Thin Lizzie
– Kiss
– Rory Gallagher
– Paul Revere & The Raiders
– Moody Blues

How does one justify Bon Jovi as being unworthy for this? They have been around for upwards of 30 years, they have millions of fans, and they are still releasing music and touring, and putting on amazing shows for the thousands of fans who go to their concerts?? They had talent when the began and they still do today.
I’m more than willing to change my opinion on whether they should get into the rock n roll hall of fame, but I need rock solid reasons, I have yet to know of any. If it’s because you just don’t like them, well that’s not a good enough reason.

Depeche Mode. It’s a travesty they aren’t in this–30 years, over 100 million albums sold worldwide, influence to everyone from dance music to heavy metal bands, still making critically acclaimed music and selling out world tours.
But, oh, yeah, they use synthesizers so they aren’t a real rock n roll band, right? Wrong!

Glad to see Alice Cooper on the ballot. Bon Jovi will get in, and they deserve to. I’m all for Joe Tex. Not a big Neil Diamond fan, but I think he’ll get it. Everything else, I’m a bit underwhelmed by. And I have yet to understand how the Hall of Fame considers hip hop & rap to be part of rock & roll.

Stroygrl,
It’s a very simple answer:
Bon Jovi has produced nothing more than unoriginal, formula-rock that is no better/worse than the output of 300 bar bands around the country. In that sense, one could say they are similar in many ways to an act like REO Speedwagon (I say that in a bad way, in case you are wondering).
Songwriting? Medicocre. Instrumentation? Fair to Good. Vocal Delivery? Good. Album Legacy? Mediocre.
It’s one thing to have a popular following–that does (and should) have influence. But one would hope that this honor also requires a supreme level of talent and quality work as well.
Bon Jovi? Fail.

This is a nice article, and damned if this debate won’t pop up every year. Reality Check makes a valid argument about Bon Jovi. Many other bands sound a lot like them, and really how many bands really point at Bon Jovi and say they were my influence? OK lets put this into perspective here. Bon Jovi shouldnt of been in the hall this year they SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN WHEN THEY WERE ELIGIBLE 2 YEARS AGO. They have sold over 120 million albums (more than kiss and guns n roses) have had 5 no 1 singles, 4 no 1 albums (they had 5 in a row in the uk), a grammy and countless other awards and honours including being one of only a few acts to play in CENTRAL PARK!! They sell out every show, have had a residency in the O2 arena in London for a full month, had the biggest grossing tour of any band for their last tour beating springsteen and madonna and have opened arenas like the new meadowlands stadium and the O2. Also, they are the only rock/hard rock band to have an album which spawned 5 top ten hits and the only rock band to have a song on top of the country charts. They may not be everyones favourites but they are definetely WORTHY of being in the rock and roll hall of fame. One last thing, livin on a prayer is officially the most popular rock song in the world since the 80s. If anyone wants more reasons why they should be in then i will be happy to tell them ๐

Here are a few things we know about the RnR HOF, a few Rubicons we crossed long, long ago:
1) The very notion of a HoF is *completely* UN-rock ‘n roll. This was the music of teen rebellion. Of cultural and racial miscegenation. Of outsiders, misfits, screw-ups and dorks.
2) There are plenty of inductees who did not make any sort of rock ‘n roll. They have a whole category called “Early Influences”.
3) Record sales have never been a large part of the consideration for inclusion. The Velvet Underground are a pretty good example of a band who did not sell large amounts of records but who definitely deserve to be there.
Sorry, Bon Jovi lovers, your guys should not be there. Leaving aside the issue of record sales and concentrating solely on the issue of “influence”, are you really going to argue that the Jersey boys are more influential than some others who are not in. How about ooooh, off the top of my head: Husker Du, Kraftwerk, Sonic Youth, NY Dolls, Buzzcocks
Chuck – I had no idea Joy Division is not in. Now *that* is a travesty.
The standout for me on this years list is Dr. John. He is very important to lots of rock ‘n roll, soul, funk, jazz and psychedelic musics.
And, yes Chuck, I have plenty of Dr. John’s LPs and CDs. ๐
For folks interested in hearing his stuff, check out the 2 CD Rhino compilation “Mos’ Scocious : The Dr. John Anthology”. For a paradoxically more out-there idea, try the amazingly well recorded “Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack”.
