The last day is approaching. And there’s nothing I can do – no arguments, no pleadings, no negotiations – that can extend it past one more second.
On December 30, 2010, Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas will develop its last batches of Kodachrome film – and that’s it. No other rolls of Kodachrome will ever be developed by anyone – ever.
And I have less than 90 days left to use the film.

So far, I’ve had great success with Kodachrome; some of my shots with the iconic slide film have appeared in competition and in publications. It’s been a great tool for me in terms of working with film – i.e., not relying completely on a digital camera to compensate for my shots. The excitement of receiving my film back from Kansas, opening the package, looking through the slides, and going – okay – decent – holy cow, how did I get that shot?
There are still a few things I want to photograph before it’s too late. My photography shopping list includes:
- Christmas lights at night, possibly a trip through the Washington Park lights display.
- The lunar eclipse on December 21.
- The rainbow-illuminated evening view of Niagara Falls (I had tried to get this back in March, but things didn’t work out).
- Some golden hour sunrises and sunsets in the Capital District.
- Some evening city skyscraper shots (I still have one roll of Kodachrome 40 for this task)
And then one final roll, which I hope to photograph for the entire day on December 28, 2010. That roll will go into a FedEx mailer to get to Kansas before the deadline – only film arriving before noon on December 30th will be processed.
I’m going to get as many of these “goals” as I possibly can.
Hopefully I’ll achieve all of them.
I’d settle for most of them.
But I will not give up.
You know me.
This kind of reminds me of that great Paul Simon song, “Kodachrome”.

Wow, Chuck. A post that makes me admire your resolve and lament the passing of an era.
Somehow, the film era needs to be remembered. I was just thinking the other day, after we told the kid about how dogs see only in B&W, that if we get another pooch its name will be Tri-X.
