The Deck Chair from the Titanic

Ian McCarthy is the general manager of the Saint John (New Brunswick) Mill Rats of the Premier Basketball League.  Before then, he was the general manager of the team when it played in Manchester, New Hampshire as the Millrats (one word, it’s two words now) from 2007 to 2010; and before then, when the team played in Cape Cod in another league as the Cape Cod Frenzy.

But long before he became a basketball executive, he owned a piece of very collectible history.

Seems Ian and a friend were, at one time, able to purchase an old deck chair.  Upon further discovery, they surmised that the deck chair may have actually rested on the maiden voyage of the deck of the RMS Titanic.

That would be one helluva deck chair if that were true.

Problem is, they had to prove that he deck chair came from the Titanic.  It’s not like every piece of equipment on the Titanic has a little tag on it saying where it came from.  The chair had a carved five-pointed star in the headrest, which was the logo of the White Star Line.  But that’s not concrete and conclusive and direct proof of provenance.

Ian’s story was later told on the Discovery Channel’s TV show “The Hunt for Amazing Treasures.”  It’s pretty fascinating, especially if you’re a fan of shows like The History Detectives or American Pickers or Antiques Roadshow.  The clip of the show, featuring the deck chair, is listed below.

Now if Ian can get his mitts on a decent point guard and a durable center for the Mill Rats … well, that’s another story entirely.
