Before I say who got in, let’s recap from my “betting sheet” earlier this year.
THE BEASTIE BOYS
- I said: Chances are Decent. Maybe not first ballot, but they’ll get in someday.
- Did they get in? NO.
- My response to that: That just wallows in lameness.
BON JOVI
- I said: They’re in. Without question.
- Did they get in? NO.
- My response to that: Wow. Somebody got shafted.
CHIC
- I said: Not this year.
- Did they get in? NO.
- My response to that: Kinda figured that would happen.
ALICE COOPER
- I said: Very strong.
- Did he get in? YES!!
- My response: So does this mean that a theater-rock group like KISS will get in soon?
NEIL DIAMOND .
- I said: Please God, no.
- Did he get in? YES!!
- My response: Truly, this is proof that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame needs hearing aids.
DR. JOHN
- I said: Not this year.
- Did he get in? YES!!
- My response: I don’t mind being wrong on this one.
DONOVAN
- I said: First ballot.
- Did he get in? NO.
- My response: You’re going to put Neil Diamond in and leave Donovan out?
J. GEILS BAND
- I said: Would like to see it, but it’s a longshot at best.
- Did they get in? NO.
- My response: Well, at least there’s one team from Boston that isn’t going to win this year.
LL COOL J
- I said: Good.
- Did he get in? NO.
- My response: Maybe he needs a few more episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles under his belt before he gets elected.
DARLENE LOVE
- I said: Should have gotten in last year.
- Did she get in? YES!!
- My response: It’s about freakin’ time!!
LAURA NYRO
- I said: Might take a ballot or two.
- Did she get in? NO.
- My response: Somebody needs to check those ballots.
DONNA SUMMER
- I said: Not this year.
- Did she get in? NO.
- My response: I just don’t see Donna Summer getting into the Rock Hall any more than I see them inducting KC and the Sunshine Band.
JOE TEX
- I said: Should have gotten in last year.
- Did he get in? NO.
- My response: Oh come on now. Buy a Joe Tex LP and campaign for his election in 2011.
TOM WAITS
- I said: Doubtful.
- Did he get in? YES!!
- My response: It’s gotta be due to his songwriting. He’s written some fantastic songs.
CHUCK WILLIS
- I said: Wish he could get in, but it won’t be this year.
- Did he get in? NO.
- My response: I didn’t think he had a chance this year.
So although I picked my top five as Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Donovan, Darlene Love and a coinflip between LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys, only two of my pics (Alice Cooper and Darlene Love) got into the Rock Hall. Congratulations to all the inductees. Even Neil Diamond. I’m still scratching my skull over that one.
And next year… listen to me, Rock Hall… put the Moody Blues and the Guess Who and New Order on the ballot. Do the right thing.
