The finals of the Elbo Room $1,000 Spring Tournament

Seven of the eight teams who qualified for the Elbo Room $1,000 Spring Tournament finals showed up last night at Elbo Room.  Stern Fans, who qualified in the first week and then hadn’t shown up since, arrived.  So did the Skidmarks and the Fist and Team Schooled and Woo Hoo a Go Go and Get That Poison Out.  Oh yeah, and team Street Academy.  The only team that didn’t show up were the Waffledingers, who qualified one week and then never came back.  Sorry, guys.  You wasted a chance to win a grand.  Your loss.

Anyways, in an Elbo Room tournament final, after every quarter of questions – usually following a 10-pointer – a “bet your points” question is asked.  So there will be 23 questions, not 20.  And here we go.

If you want to play along, here are the questions.  You can skip two questions, you can use a “double chance” – two answers on a non-bonus question.

  • Tom Anderson was the founder of what internet company? (2 pts)
  • Who starred in the Death Wish movies? (4 pts)
  • In what year did the Angels win the World Series? (6 pts)
  • In what year did Gerald Ford die? (8 pts)
  • Who inducted U2 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? (10 pts)
  • What American League baseball team has a AAA affiliate in Round Rock? (bet your points)
  • What do the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like to eat? (2 pts)
  • Orangey Orange and Lemony Yellow can be found in what cereal? (4 pts)
  • “The Trail of Tears” forced Native Americans to move to what state? (6 pts)
  • What two states had teams in the 1995 and 2006 NBA finals? (double bonus, 8 points each)
  • Tripoli is the capital of what country? (10 pts)
  • What number state was New York inducted into the Union? (bet your points)
  • What is known as America’s last colony? (2 pts)
  • What film begins with the line, “As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster”? (4 pts)
  • In what year did Adolf Hitler kill himself? (6 pts)
  • In what decades were the Papa John’s, Domino’s, Sbarro’s and Pizza Hut chains opened? (quadruple bonus, 8 pts each)
  • Carlos Boozer was born in what country? (10 pts)
  • What Canadian actor got his start on the Nickelodeon Series “Fifteen”? (bet your points)
  • Who had an early role as the Boy in the Plastic Bubble? (4 pts)
  • What Disney film had a young girl joining the Chinese army? (6 pts)
  • What is Martha Stewart’s three letter stock ticker? (triple bonus, 8 pts per answer)
  • What South American country’s flag resembles the flag of Texas? (10 pts)
  • What artist’s record for most LP’s was broken by Jay-Z in 2009? (bet your points, final question)

We did well after the first few questions, although we burned our two skips early – we did not know that Gerald Ford died in 2006, nor were we aware that Springsteen inducted U2 into the Rock Hall.  That put Street Academy in the middle of the pack.  And although we remained competitive throughout the night, we whiffed on the quadruple bonus question – I guess the founding of pizza chains isn’t our strong suit – and we did not know that Bulls center Carlos Boozer was born in Germany.

But if you are curious about what the final answers are, here you go:

  • MySpace
  • Charles Bronson
  • 2002
  • 2006
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Texas Rangers
  • Pizza, dude
  • Trix
  • Oklahoma
  • Florida, Texas
  • Libya
  • 11
  • Puerto Rico
  • Goodfellas
  • 1945
  • 80’s, 70’s, 50’s, 50’s
  • Germany
  • Ryan Reynolds
  • John Travolta
  • Mulan
  • MSO
  • Chile
  • Jay-Z

But throughout the entire game, the team known as Get That Poison Out – apparently it’s a reference to something said on the Howard Stern Show – took an early lead, kept that early lead, nailed the Ryan Reynolds question to take a Secretariat-sized lead, and never looked back.

So congratulations to the team of Get That Poison Out, they won the big prize – $1,000 – and really did well throughout the entire game.  Much applause to them.

And with that, the Elbo Room tournament has come to a close.

But it will surely restart in the fall.

And my team will be there.

And we hope you are there too.
