Rest in peace, Alexander Vasyunov…

Oh my God.

The news came as quickly as a heartbeat.  At least 43 people, including the entire Lokomotiv ice hockey team, one of the top Russian professional squads, were killed when their plane crashed into a river bank along the Volga.  Among those killed – former Albany Devils left winger Alexander Vasyunov.

The tragedy of a plane crash – combined with the loss of an entire sports team – its effects are nearly mind-shattering.  Ask TU blogger Stephanie Snyder about the connection every Marshall University student feels with the crash of Southern Airways Flight 932 in 1970.  Or the loss of life from the Oklahoma State basketball team, after their plane crashed en route to returning home.   Soccer fans recall the 1958 plane crash that claimed the Manchester United soccer team.  Among the dead from the Trans-Canada Air 810 flight in 1956, with members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers CFL teams aboard.  And there’s Sabena Flight 548, a plane crash in 1961 that killed the entire United States Figure Skating team.  Roberto Clemente in 1972.  Payne Stewart in 1999.

And now we can tearfully add the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lokomotiv to this sad, tragic list.

Покойся с миром, Алекса́ндр Васю́нов. Ваше время в Олбани был коротким, но воспоминания о вас и ваших товарищей по команде останется в памяти навсегда. Да благословит вас Господь.
