Wrigley’s Gum and Uneeda Biscuits: Two New Ghost Signs for the Collection

Last year, I photographed several ghost signs – faded brickads that still promote long-ago products – throughout the Capital District, and later wrote an art book to chronicle them.

Even though the art book is complete, I still keep an eye out for any new ghost signs – well, “new” in that I haven’t seen them before, not “new” as in they were painted last week – and if I have my camera handy, I snag a picture here and there.

I spotted this “ghost sign” a week or so ago in Lowville, about half an hour north of Utica.  The Rollei was in the car, so I had to pull over and capture this image.

I knew of at least five Uneeda Biscuit advertisements in the Capital District – three in Troy, one in Schenectady and one in Albany.  But the other day, as I’m walking along Remsen Street in Cohoes… well don’tcha know there’s one on a building there, as well!  So now I’ve found six of the ubiquitous biscuit advertisements in this area.  Nice.

I’m still keeping an eye out for these faded advertisements, and if I see any more, I’ll post them here.  It’s kinda cool finding these – just like participating in a scavenger hunt!
