It’s time for Trivia Bowl VIII… and the first 15 teams are announced.

Have you been studying?  Are you up to date on your current events and your pop culture references?  Do you know your Cy Young winners and your Stanley Cup champions, as well as your Calder Cup champions and Memorial Cup champions?

Get ready.  It’s time for the Capital District’s team trivia championship – Trivia Bowl VIII.

This is the game that every trivia team has prepared for all year.  The chance to claim the coveted Trivia Bowl – the wing sauce mixing bowl that went from the kitchen at the Albany Hooters to a bolted wooden base and team trivia immortality.

In seven previous Trivia Bowls, five teams have earned the right to have their team name and teammates’ names engraved on the championship chalice.  Lynch’s Mob won the first two Trivia Bowls, while Stern Fans snagged Trivia Bowl IV.  The Legends on Lark bar has produced the winners for Trivia Bowl V (Team Load) and Trivia Bowl VII (the current champions, Stop The Bus…).  The other trivia championship team?  Street Academy, snagging Trivia Bowl III and Trivia Bowl VI.

Those five teams, by virtue of being past champions, have earned automatic lifetime invitations to the Trivia Bowl.  It’s our Green Jacket to our own personal Augusta National.

So who are the other teams that have earned the privilege to play for the precious chalice? The first fifteen teams to earn a berth in the competition, by virtue of past championships or from “at large” invitations by the trivia hosts of their local bars, are:

  • Stop The Bus (current champion)
  • Stern Fans (Trivia Bowl IV champion)
  • Lynch’s Mob (Trivia Bowl I, II champion)
  • Street Academy (Trivia Bowl III, VI champion)
  • Team Load (Trivia Bowl V champion)
  • Tres Hombres
  • Village Idiots
  • Blue Rude
  • Hap’s Collapse
  • Seals Team Six
  • D-Railed Amigos
  • WT’s United
  • Clueless
  • The Magicians
  • Touched By An Uncle

These are the first teams to earn berths.  Many teams are still playing in mini-tournaments around the Capital District, hoping to earn a “play-in” spot.  So this list will increase as we get closer to February 4.

Get ready.  The trash-talking starts… oh… right about… now.
