Over the weekend, I traveled to Canada for a photography assignment. In order to reach my destination, I had to travel through Maine’s State Route 9 from Bangor to Calais. 75 miles of winding road, blowing snow, freezing rain and seasonally closed souvenir stands.
As I drove the route, I spotted a few signs and images that I wanted to photograph. Unfortunately, I was running against the clock and had to be in Canada by nigthtfall; so I noted where each image was, so that when I drove back through State Route 9 on the way home, I could pull over and take some pictures.
And on the way back, I had to get this picture – it’s a sign from the Amherst General Store, a souvenir stand with a diner and convenience shop. Luckily for me, it was open – the bacon and eggs were quite tasty, just so you know.
Of course I had to get this sign. Now judging from the outline of the top advertising sign, I would suspect this was once a Gulf service station. However, you gotta laugh when you see what the owners replaced the Gulf sign with.

I’m guessing that this is some sort of down-home Maine humor… just when it’s nearby, you don’t want to pass it… pfft…
