Made in 1968 – about 2001 – recut in 2012.

If you’ve never seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, you’ve missed out on one of the greatest sci-fi epics of all time. Stanley Kubrick’s futuristic vision was a watershed movie of its time, and there’s plenty of scenes in there where you have to think to yourself, “How did he film that?” or “How did his film seem so prescient?” or “That’s one creepy computer, doesn’t HAL know about the three laws of robotics?”

So watch the original trailer with me for a second.

Interested yet? How about this longer version of the original trailer. Note the reference at the end to “roadshow performances,” this film first appeared in the large ultra-wide-screen movie theaters, before appearing nationwide.

Now what would have happened if 2001: A Space Odyssey was released this year as a summer blockbuster film? You know, if it received the same treatment that a film like Prometheus did.

Well, thanks to my friend Mark sending me this little link, here’s how the film might have looked if it was released this summer.

Wow. Let me ask you this. If this were playing right now at the local theater, just by watching the 2012 trailer – would you have gone to see this film?

Personally, I’d watch it – if for no other reason than to add it to my “Royale With Cheese Movie Club” of films that everybody in the whole wide world – with the exception of me – has seen. How about you?
