TBIX is coming…

It’s this Saturday.  February 2.  2013.  Wolf’s 1-11.

TBIX.

No, it’s not some new alt-emo rock group with their new hit single on the Pop Crush radio station.

TBIX is a gathering of the strongest and most dedicated trivia teams in the Capital District, in the biggest championship game in the area.

In other words… “TBIX” is shorthand for “Trivia Bowl 9.”

The ninth annual Capital District trivia championship will take place at Wolf’s 1-11 on Wolf Rod in Colonie; it’s the fourth consecutive year that this restaurant will host the event.  The questions will be harder, the stakes will be higher, and winning the championship trophy is the greatest feeling in the world.

Only six teams have claimed this championship.  Street Academy and Lynch’s Mob have won it twice.  The other four teams are Stern Fans, Team Load, Stop the Bus, and the current trophy possessors, Team Gretchen.  Those six teams receive lifetime invitations to Trivia Bowl.

Other teams who have won regularly at their local bars and taverns will receive the proverbial “golden ticket’ invitations from their trivia hosts.   And other teams can participate in special “TBIX Qualifying” games at select trivia bar locations.

So who’s locked in for the event?  Who received the golden ticket?  There’s still some qualifying games going on, but here’s the list of invitees:

  • Street Academy (two-time champion)
  • Team Gretchen (current champion)
  • Stop The Bus (past champion)
  • Lynch’s Mob (two-time champion)
  • Stern Fans (past champion)
  • Team Load (past champion)
  • Motley Crue
  • Plan B is my Plan A
  • Seals Team Six
  • Now That’s How You Get Pinkeye
  • The Village Idiots
  • Clueless
  • Surf Tulsa
  • Origami Swans
  • Hap’s Collapse
  • Tres Hombres
  • A Few Cards Short of a Deck
  • Prestige Worldwide
  • Blue Abides
  • La Famiglia
  • Quack Pack
  • My Wife The Tramp
  • 106
  • Tap This!
  • Slumdog
  • There Is No “I”…
  • Just The Tips
  • Manti’s Phone Bill Is Stuck Together
  • Team 3

This list will increase as more teams qualify in regional tournaments for berths, while other teams receive at-large invitations.

And the questions?  Heck, those questions are going to make your brain explode like John Belushi’s cheeks in Animal House.  They won’t be questions that start with “in what decade…”  They’ll start with “in what year…”  This won’t be “what color is an orange” or “how many people do you need to make a foursome.”  This will be a straight-up, tougher than algebra questions.

So get ready.  Bring your brains.  Bring your best.  And if you can defeat over 35 different trivia teams on this one special Saturday afternoon in February…

Then you can call yourself a champion.  And I will be he first one to come over and shake your hand and congratulate you and all your teammates.
