Today’s going to be a fun day. I’ve dug up some vintage classics from the 1960’s for today’s K-Chuck Radio, so crank up your computer speakers and let’s get dancing around the office!
THE EQUALS
Baby Come Back
In America, the Equals were a one-hit wonder, and that one hit – “Baby Come Back” – was sort of a national hit, except that it was #1 in several cities – but just not at the same time. Oh, and the lead singer of the Equals – some guy named Eddy Grant. Yeah, this was about 15 years before he started rocking down to Electric Avenue.
THE CAKE
You Can Have Him
I’ve played the Cake before on K-Chuck Radio, this was their second hit, and it has some serious Phil Spector influence to it. There’s a Smothers Brothers YouTube video clip out there that shows the Cake in performance, but one of the girls just wasn’t keen on lip-synching that night. I’d rather just show this video of the record playing, if you get my drift.
THE RARE BREED
Beg, Borrow and Steal
I’ve played this track before; it was an early version of what would become the Ohio Express’ first big hit.
THE UGLY DUCKLINGS
Nothin’
Anybody want some classic Toronto garage rock? I got what you need right here.
RICHARD AND THE YOUNG LIONS
Open Up Your Door
This was another “it was a hit everywhere, just not at the same time” track. And by the time the record company wanted a follow-up track… Richard and the Young Lions were no more.
THE CRYAN’ SHAMES
It Could Be We’re In Love
Ah, the delicious sounds of 1960’s Chicago pop. Again, these guys had monster hits in Chicago, but outside of Illinois this group was often confused with a Joe Meek-produced British group called the “Cryin’ Shames.”
THE SWEET THREE
That’s The Way It Is (When A Girl’s In Love)
This song is so quintessential 60’s – a girl group combined with a Motown groove. Awesome track.
RAY COLUMBUS AND THE INVADERS
Till We Kissed
A cover of the Chad Allen & the Expressions hit from Canada, this group from New Zealand had several hits throughout Oceania; this was their biggest. Unfortunately, “biggest” means it still didn’t get to American shores.
BARBARA ACKLIN
Am I The Same Girl?
You might know this song as a hit by Swing Out Sister a decade ago; and you might recognize the instrumental track as one by the Young-Holt Unlimited, but if you’re going to really enjoy some 60’s groove, then you have to hear this version of “Am I The Same Girl?” by Barbara Acklin.
CANDY AND THE KISSES
The 81
This stomper track was a major hit in Philadelphia and the surrounding communities; it was also the first songwriting hit for Kenny Gamble, who would later pen hundreds of soul classics with Leon Huff.
So everybody have a great day, and enjoy this hot playlist from K-Chuck Radio!!
