I have a love-hate relationship with the social media site reddit. That being said, I am a big fan of Reddit’s “Secret Santa” gift exchange.
It’s similar to the gift exchange you probably did in grade school. Twenty names in a basket, you pick someone’s name, you get a gift for that person, while someone else has gotten you a gift.
So this year, the subreddit /r/secretsanta is trying to set a new Guinness record for the most participants in a Secret Santa gift exchange. They’re hoping to reach 100,000 completed gifts swapped. And guess what? There’s a couple of lucky Redditors who might get matched up with this guy…
You might have heard of him. Shaquille O’Neal, four-time NBA champion and all-around great guy. There’s also the possibility that you could get matched up with this guy.
Yeah. That’s Mark McGrath, game show host and the lead singer of Sugar Ray. Yes, you know of Sugar Ray.
And look who else stepped up to participate… it’s the crew from my second-favorite pawnbroker TV show, Hardcore Pawn!
And the guys from TruTV’s camera-prank-punk’d show, Impractical Jokers, are also taking part in the escapades!
Wow. All I need now is some tow-truck driving lessons from Bernice of South Beach Tow, a week hanging out with the Storage Hunters, and maybe Jesse James Dupree from Full Throttle Saloon can have a Jackyl concert at the old Ford plant in Green Island. Now that would be a true Pa-Pow! moment… 🙂
Or you could get matched up with anyone else. The rules are simple. Sign up for the gift exchange, and then wait. You’ll get matched up with someone, and you buy them a gift and ship it to them. And while that’s happening, someone is sending you a gift.
I participated in the Secret Santa project last year, sending gifts, receiving a gift, and blogging about the whole experience.
So this year, not only did I sign up for the Secret Santa 2013 gift exchange… I also signed up as a “rematcher.” A rematcher is someone who gives a gift to a redditor who DIDN’T receive a gift from their grinchy Santa. It’s the holiday season.
So if you want to participate in that worldwide game that you once played back in grade school… here’s your chance to have some fun.
And who knows? You might be the lucky recipient of a present from Mark McGrath. Or of a present from Shaquille O’Neal.
Although with my luck, I’d probably end up with a present from Gilbert Arenas. Or a gift from the Numa Numa kid. Hee.
