Preservation in Saratoga Springs via a candelight tour

I believe in the preservation and restoration of the Capital District’s buildings, homes and iconography.   And with that in mind, I want to let everybody know about an upcoming event in Saratoga Springs that fits that very purpose.

In two weeks – on Friday, December 6 – the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation will host a tour through some of downtown Saratoga Springs’ most beautiful historic houses.  Beginning at 5:00 p.m., attendees can visit houses along Union Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, among others.

Also keep an eye in each house for Saratoga Springs’ ubiquitous taste treat – the legendary “Peppermint Pig.”  Each house will have a Peppermint Pig on display, and if you find the porcine candy, you can enter to win a gift basket from Saratoga Sweets.

The tour will be followed by an after-party at Union Gables Bed & Breakfast, 55 Union Avenue, beginning at 7:30pm and ending at 10:30pm. The after-party will feature a silent auction, food from the area’s finest dining establishments, holiday music, and a cash bar.

This year’s auction is packed with great holiday gift ideas including:

  • handmade original jewelry
  • a weekend stay for two at Great Camp Sagamore
  • New York City Ballet tickets compliments of SPAC
  • an overnight stay at the Georgian Lakeside Resort in Lake George
  • Glimmerglass Opera tickets
  • a hot air balloon ride provided by Equinox Balloons
  • “The Neighborhood Watch” framed photo artwork by Chuck Miller
  • “Star Trails of Thacher Park” framed photo artwork by Chuck Miller

Oh yeah… I’m donating two artworks to the Chinese auction.

In addition to the after-party, many of the beautifully decorated guest-rooms at the Union Gables Bed & Breakfast will be open for viewing to after-party guests.

The cost for this event is $50 ($40 for members) for the tour, or a package with the tour and reception for $85 ($75 members).  Tickets for the tour can be purchased the evening of the event at the Public School No. 4 building at 112 Spring Street starting at 5:00pm.

For more information, or to purchase tickets, call 518-587-5030, or email cht@saratogapresevation.org.  You can also visit www.saratogapreservation.org to order tickets online.

All funds raised at this event support the Foundation’s ongoing educational programs and efforts to preserve the unique architectural, landscaped, and cultural heritage of Saratoga Springs.

And who knows?  You might be the lucky winner of one of my framed photo artworks.

Can’t go wrong with that.
