A legend passed from our lands yesterday. He gave us 94 years of the best folk music of our generation. He was also a man of conscience, of conviction and of completeness.
With that in mind, please enjoy the music and career of Pete Seeger, first a couple of tracks from his years with the great folk band, the Weavers.
THE WEAVERS
Goodnight, Irene
This cover of the old Leadbelly song was the best-selling single in the United States for nearly three months.
THE WEAVERS
Wimoweh
This was originally a South African folk song by Solomon Linda; of course, it’s now better known as the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
And here’s some Pete Seeger performances with other luminaries of popular music and pop culture.

This Land Is Your Land
I wanted to feature this performance in that it’s not Pete Seeger singing, but one of the many musicians and singers and songwriters who were influenced by Seeger’s decades of popularity and activism and melody.

Which Side Are You On?
Okay, back to Seeger himself.

God’s Counting on Me, God’s Counting on You
This was one of his final singles, recorded in support of efforts to clean up the Gulf of Mexico after the devastation of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
And finally… here’s Pete Seeger at last year’s Farm Aid in Saratoga Springs.

If I Had a Hammer
Rest in peace, Pete Seeger. The world is a much better place because you were part of it. And now that you’re moving to a new performance venue… our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.
He will be missed. Sloop Clearwater for life.

Pete was an amazing human being and consummate artist. He took on causes that were unpopular. He was an unabashed liberal to the end and never worried about what others might think. I heard him many, many times, including a Philadelphia folk fest eons ago. Pete certainly left the world a better place. I am not too surprise at his passing. After his beloved wife left for the Great Folk Stage in the Sky, I think Pete was bereft. She was very much the wind beneath his wings, hoary cliche that may be. RIP, Pete. There will never be anyone like you.
