I’ve been having a lot of fun with my new Kodak Medalist II camera, and this metal beast has already proven it can handle an array of medium-format film photography, so long as I respool 120 film onto 620 spools. A small inconvenience if I can get decent photos out of it.
As part of my commitment to making this camera part of my overall arsenal, I downloaded a light meter program for my BlackBerry Q10 cell phone. With it, I can enter two of the three required elements for taking a picture (film speed, F-stop, shutter speed) and then, with one tap on my cell phone, if I have two of the elements, the phone can tell me the third. Aces.
The weather’s getting warmer. Spring has finally arrived. And I need to get some good photos out of this red-leathered beast.
Road trip down I-88. And I should let you know that the last time I drove down I-88 was a week earlier, when I traveled to Binghamton to capture some baseball photos. That time, I saw a few locations along I-88 that, if I could find the right exit, I could definitely photograph. And one of them was a winding road that traveled under a small railroad trestle.
I found the winding road. Podpadic Road in a little town called Richmondville.
A jogger was getting her early Sunday morning exercise. I snapped one shot with the Medalist.

Okay, that’s a nice enough picture… maybe I can crop out all this background in post-processing…

Mmm… the photo’s a bit soft. I’ll have to try harder next time to get a better shot.
Okay, now let’s see what I can find here.
Hey, there’s a nice looking stream… Maybe I can get a photo or two…

No need to recrop this one. I gotta tell you, this Kodak Medalist II is really outperforming my expectations. And –
Oh look. Is that a small waterfall near the stream? A waterfall that feeds into what may or may not be Schenevus Creek?
How many shots do I have left in this camera?
Enough.
Because if I still have one frame left in this camera…
I can get this shot.

Nice… and you know what?
I have an idea for these Podpadic Road photos.
Maybe as a competitive photo. Or maybe as part of another artwork.
The best thing about this…
is that it’s nice to have these ideas available whenever I need them. That’s cool in and of itself. And capturing the first warm day of 2014… feels a lot better when I’m trying to get ready for work and I’m seeing snow outside my front stoop in late April.
