Earlier this week, I took my camera gear for another trip through the Adirondacks. At this point in time, I’m looking for something to add to my arsenal of photos for competition season. If I find something better than what I currently have available for show, then that’s fantastic. If not… then it’s just a trip through the North Country.
At the time, I was hoping to photograph some barns. I’ve garnered some minor success with barn photos in the past, both Barn Versus Weeds and Route 9W Dairy Barn have achieved some ribbons in competition. But I needed to “up” my game.
And as I wandered around the back of an abandoned, unused barn…
That’s when I found it.
An abandoned piece of farm equipment.

Last time I discovered something like this, it was a hay baler / combine in the Normanskill. I initially thought it was a bulldozer, until some of my readers set me straight.
I figure that this has to be some sort of plow or mower, but once again I’m not sure.
Thankfully, former Times Union community blogger Freddie Dunn came to my rescue. When I posted a picture of this little machine on Facebook, he immediately identified it as a horse-drawn mower. Thanks, Freddie.
Gee. I wonder how many other abandoned farm plows and mowers and balers and the like are scattered throughout the Capital District – rotting, rusting hulks of machines, forgotten by their owners and let to integrate once again with the land upon which they once worked.
Okay… I don’t mean to get that metaphysical… but hey, sometimes a photograph is just a photograph. 🙂
