At some point in time, these songs were played over and over and OVER and OVER on the radio. You saw their videos every hour on the hour on MTV. (Insert obligatory crack about MTV playing music videos at one time in its career HERE).
And what happened to these songs? They disappeared. Not even a sniff on oldies radio stations.
Well, guess what. This is why there’s a K-Chuck Radio station, just to be able to play these songs one more time and bring back all those great memories. I want you to think about this the next time you hear some oldies station who seems to be stuck on playing “No Diggity” like it was the only song ever released a generation ago.
JANE CHILD
Don’t Want to Fall In Love
This was a great song, and if you got past Jane Child’s look – which would have required at least a two-hour stop at a TSA checkpoint – you could dig this song and hope that she released another track. Nope. This was it.
PRETTY POISON
Catch Me I’m Falling
Pretty Poison was a very popular dance band in Philadelphia; this song appeared in a motion picture and became the band’s only national hit.
TARA KEMP
Hold You Tight
I’m not sure what to make of this artist. Her voice was okay, I guess, and her dance skills were barely above a grade D Madonna-esque vogueing pose. But hey, she had a hit. That’s more than you or I have had on the pop charts.
D-MOB feat. CATHY DENNIS
C’Mon and Get My Love
I remember D-Mob as a purveyor of house music – their biggest house track was something called “We Call It Acieed.” Eventually they teamed up with singer Cathy Dennis, and this track became a hit.
And while we’re at it…
CATHY DENNIS
Touch Me (All Night Long)
Yep, Cathy Dennis had a couple of songs of her own, including this song that was poached from a 1984 Fonda Rae club hit.
WAS (NOT WAS)
Walk the Dinosaur
Oh my LORD THIS SONG WAS PLAYED ALL OVER THE PLACE!! I even remember being in a club when this song blasted through the sound system – and everybody started singing, with modified lyrics, “Open the door / stomp on the floor / everybody stomp the dinosaur…” Holy Sinclair, Batman!
MELLOW MAN ACE
Mentirosa
Nothing like mixing a classic Santana riff with a bilingual diss-rap.
CORINA
Temptation
I’m not sure I remember this song getting as popular as it did in Albany, but I do recall Corina making a special “meet-and-greet” appearance at an Albany Patroons game at the Knickerbocker Arena many years ago.
SNAP!
The Power
While this song did get a ton of airplay in the Capital District, I seem to recall some radio stations in the area – yes, you, FLY 92.3 – played a sanitized version of this song that only contained the chorus and singing, with the rap portion edited out. Hmm… maybe if the song contained references to “haji-marts,” you’d play it, wouldn’t you?
THE KLF
3 A.M. Eternal
And finally, we have the techno group known as the KLF, who were poised to break through as one of the biggest electronic dance bands of the 1990’s… and then they just disappeared, as if they never existed. But they did leave us this tasty Top 10 hit.
There you go. Ten dance tracks that were at the top of their game… and disappeared, almost eliminating their fame. So where can you go for this music to claim? K-Chuck Radio, so don’t complain!
