You know what? I really enjoy classic R&B/influenced 80’s rap music. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C., the Sugarhill Gang – all very enjoyable for me. So let’s set up five songs from that classic rapper Kurtis Blow, and five songs from the awesome rap trio Whodini.
Yep, it’s an old-fashioned rap music battle.
In this corner… Kurtis Blow, with his hit “The Breaks.”
Not to be outdone, Whodini are ready with their first big hit, “Magic’s Wand.”
Okay, back to Kurtis Blow, with his hit that used to be played in every hoops arena, “Basketball.”
Your serve, Whodini… may as well ask how many friends you have, and how many of us have them…
Up next, Kurtis Blow, and he has “8 Million Stories” to tell us. No, you don’t have to play this clip eight million times to hear them all… but you do get to hear Run-D.M.C. as guest rappers on this track.
Whodini may not have eight million stories, but they do have “Five Minutes of Funk.”
Time for Kurtis Blow to break out a little holiday music. What, just because it’s June I can’t play a little Christmas rappin’?
And finally, a track from Whodini. What, just because it’s not Halloween, I can’t play that the freaks come out at night?
There you go. Old-fashioned old-school rap battle, packed on classic 12-inch vinyl and spun on the old Technics SL-1200MK2 wheels of steel.
Yeah. Classic stuff. Of course, I’m partial to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five… but that’s just me. 🙂
