I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan through and through. Which automatically means that I detest the Cleveland Browns, the Baltimore Ravens, any team in the AFC East, the Dallas Cowboys, the Green Bay Packers, and any team that DARES to sign Tim Tebow to their roster.
Last year, the Steelers lost one of their greatest linebackers ever, when James Harrison signed a two-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals. He played part of the season, and was cut after the 2013-14 season. Harrison eventually signed a one-day “retirement” contract, meaning he could officially retire as a member of the Black and Gold.
Yeah, I’m going to miss watching all those bone-crushing, super-dominant hits that James Harrison used to dish out.
Well… maybe he’s not retiring after all.
Last Sunday night, in the Steelers’ complete destruction of the Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh’s defense lost several key players to injuries – including first-round picks Ryan Shazier and Jarvis Jones, as well as long-time Steeler grat Ike Taylor. Yes, I know that football is a violent sport. Yes, I know that injuries occur.
But then… out of nowhere… I saw this Instagram video.

And according to ESPN, Harrison signed a contract with the Steelers that will allow #92 to return to the game in black and gold.
Wow.
Think about this for a second. This would be the equivalent of the Yankees losing most of their bullpen and asking Mariano Rivera to come back for one more season. Or the New Jersey Devils deciding that they want to keep Martin Brodeur around for another couple of seasons.
And the Steelers’ upcoming schedule – hosting Tampa Bay (win), at Jacksonville (big win), at Cleveland (another win – duh), Monday night hosting Houston (of course it’s another win) – will only benefit from the experience and leadership of #92.
Yeah, this is the way I play fantasy football.
But if Harrison is healthy enough to step back into his linebacker position for a few more games – at least until Ryan Shazier and Jarvis Jones get healthy – then what a great on-the-field moment this would be. What an opportunity. What a great sports story. Aging veteran puts the pads and helmet on one more time.
And if we get one more moment from James Harrison that comes even CLOSE to this moment in time…
Then I’m a happy man.
So Art Rooney II, who is in charge of the independant investigation of the NFL’s handling of domestic violence approved of this signing.
But….
Before bringing Harrison out of retirement, Tomlin said, the Steelers talked to him about his 2008 arrest in a domestic dispute. Harrison was charged in March 2008 with assaulting his girlfriend, Beth Tibbott, during an argument at her Ohio Township home. He was accused of striking her with an open hand and grabbing and destroying her cell phone when she tried to call 911.
The misdemeanor assault charge was dropped in April 2008 after Harrison completed anger management counseling and Ms. Tibbott declined to prosecute.
