Middle ages drama on network television? Hasn’t worked very well. I think the last time there was such a program on network TV was a drama called Covington Cross, which I think lasted three weeks before the plug was pulled.
Musical comedy on network television? Hasn’t worked very well. I’m not talking jukebox musicals like Glee or Nashville; I’m talking shows where the characters sing – like Cop Rock or Viva Laughlin.
Ye Olde satire on network television? Nopes. There was that 1970’s Mel Brooks show When Things Were Rotten, which I think lasted maybe 13 episodes if it lasted a full year.
So why am I so excited about this new Middle Ages comedy-drama-musical theater series called Galavant?

Holy Stephen Sondheim meets Monty Python. This looks funny. This looks intriguing.
This has to be nearly every drama kid’s fantasy – a musical drama about a good and true knight who loses his fair maiden to an evil king… and somehow finds a way to try to win her heart back. With song and dance.
This could be the best midseason drama ever. It’s a high-concept fantasy piece that has more buzz surrounding it than a honey factory.
Then again, I’m also waiting for one of those closed-circuit “Live from the Met” theater concerts to show Spamalot… but I digress.
So what say you? Does Galavant look like a worthwhile Sunday night diversion? Or would you rather flip the dial for a new episode of The Good Wife?
