I trimmed a few “competition season” competitions from my 2015 exhibitions. I didn’t enter the Iowa State Fair or the Washington State Fair this year; and after what happened in the Vermont State Fair last year, they’re on my naughty list until further notice.
But I did decide to return to one competition this season; one in which I had some major success in the past.
Background.
In 2013, I entered the Durham Fair (Connecticut) photo competition, at the recommendation of my friend and fellow photographer Robert Burger. Of the four photos I entered, two pictures took ribbons – The Jumbuck snagged a third-place in its category, while The AGFA Bridge Over Ansco Lake garnered my first-ever Best in Show silk.

So this year I looked at the schedule for the Durham Fair. Hmm… exhibition at the end of September.
I then checked my calendar for the New York State Fair photo competition. If I time this correctly… I could use some of the same prints for the NYS Fair for the Durham Fair. This could work in my favor.
I checked over the categories at Durham. The categories that interested me the most were – (1) Monochrome, (2) Color, (3) Image Artistry. I could enter a maximum of four images, but no more than 3 in any single category.
So I thought and thought and thought.
And in the end… I went with:
PARABOLA: FROM HADLEY TO CORINTH
Success level with this picture? A copy of it sold at the TRASK charitable auction earlier this summer.
AEROCHROME FALLS
Success level with this picture? Honorable Mention at the Altamont Fair.
JESSICA: INSTAMATIC DICHOTOMY
Jessica: Instamatic Dichotomy. AGFA Clipper Special f/6.3 camera, Kodak Gold 200 (two rolls, expiry 1992). Photographed in Schenectady, N.Y. in September 2014. Photo by Chuck Miller.
Success level with this picture? It’s coming. I’m sure of it.
VIVALDI’S POND
Vivaldi’s Pond. Kodak Medalist II camera, Kodak Ektar film, four images combined in lenticular print. Photographed in South Corinth, N.Y. in September 2014, December 2014, March 2015 and May 2015. Photo by Chuck Miller.
Success level with this picture? Honorable Mention at the New York State Fair. In fact, I couldn’t send my photos to Bob until after this picture finished its NYS Fair run. So essentially I retrieved the photo on Saturday and then packed all four shots in the mail for a speedy delivery.
I thought about putting in a legacy print – you know, one of my old prints that had some success in the past… but in the end, I decided that I’ve already printed these four images, I may as well go with them.
Four entries packaged, along with packing slip. I would normally have visited the Durham Fair to see how my prints did; however, the “pick-up day” for the Fair was Sunday the 28th, and I’ve got a major photo event that night that cannot be rescheduled.
So I’ll just wait until Bob gives me the updates on how things went.
And hopefully there will be good news.

Good luck.
