Can I get a Buena Vista Panorama shot on Central Avenue?

So it’s late September, and I still have a few rolls of AGFA Scala black and white slide film in the freezer. The only company in the world that can still develop this slide film, DR5 in Iowa, announced there would be a development run in November. So if I want to use this film and get that Buena Vista Panorama super-wide image for Competition Season 2024 … I better get my ass in gear.

I drove to the corner of Washington and Lark in downtown Albany. If I can get this shot right here on the corner … I should be able to snag an old 19th-century building, as well as maybe the Washington Avenue Armory.

Rolleiflex Automat MX on the tripod. Panoramic head attached.

Five images from left to right.

Got the film back from the developers yesterday. Let’s see what happens when I combine the images.

And I get … this.

Central Avenue. Rolleiflex Automat MX camera, AGFA Scala 200 film, five images combined in panorama. Photo (c) 2023 Chuck Miller, all rights reserved.

Well … on the positive … the images synced up pretty well. And it’s an okay image … I guess …

Oh, who am I kidding? This shot is bowling shoe ugly. I should have been DIRECTLY in front of that 19th-century tall building. But because I was off by a few feet, that image is not perfectly centered. It’s off-kilter. And the other images at left and right are so tilted, that when I tried to use a perspective tool in PhotoShop to straighten things out, it caused the upper left and right corners of the panorama to bow out. That white space in the corners is where the film ISN’T.

In other words … this picture is not good enough. Ugh.

But it did give me some tips – some essential do’s and don’ts. I have to keep working on this.

I need a quality super-wide panorama for Competition Season 2024.

And I don’t know about you … but I’m NOT going to settle for “just good enough.”

And trust me … that photo above isn’t even “just good enough.”

Ugh.
