An NPO is a directive that you’re going to have surgery today, and because of that, you are not allowed any food or liquids. See, food in the tummy during surgery could cause complications.
Which is why I’m sitting here in the hospital bed … waiting and hoping for some news today.
Last Tuesday, I was admitted to the hospital. Long story short … there isn’t enough blood flow going down to my foot, and they’re looking at either a stent or a vascular bypass. Once that’s completed, they can do some other work on my foot, and I can go home by maybe the weekend if I’m lucky.
Yesterday, I was listed as NPO, with the assumption and understanding that surgery would take place today.
By 3:00 … I was told the surgery would be postponed.
They finally fed me at 6:15. I mean, it’s decent food … and I ate it like a starving man …
But now I’m worried. If I wake up this morning and see a breakfast plate at my stand … that means I’m not NPO any more, and that there won’t be any surgery today.
But the nurse told me that, yes, once again, I’m NPO – so maybe the surgery will happen today. Maybe. Possibly.
Hopefully.
I’ll keep you posted.
Hang in there Chuck, you got this!

I’ve always found hospital food is so awful that you wouldn’t eat it even if you were in danger of dying from starvation. This makes the surgery prep easier.
