Waiting on an NPO.

An NPO is a directive that you’re going to have surgery today, and because of that, you are not allowed any food or liquids.โ€‚See, food in the tummy during surgery could cause complications.

Which is why I’m sitting here in the hospital bed … waiting and hoping for some news today.

Last Tuesday, I was admitted to the hospital.โ€‚Long story short … there isn’t enough blood flow going down to my foot, and they’re looking at either a stent or a vascular bypass.โ€‚Once that’s completed, they can do some other work on my foot, and I can go home by maybe the weekend if I’m lucky.

Yesterday, I was listed as NPO, with the assumption and understanding that surgery would take place today.โ€‚

By 3:00 … I was told the surgery would be postponed.โ€‚

They finally fed me at 6:15.โ€‚I mean, it’s decent food … and I ate it like a starving man …

But now I’m worried.โ€‚If I wake up this morning and see a breakfast plate at my stand … that means I’m not NPO any more, and that there won’t be any surgery today.โ€‚

But the nurse told me that, yes, once again, I’m NPO – so maybe the surgery will happen today.โ€‚Maybe.โ€‚Possibly.

Hopefully.

I’ll keep you posted.
