Pay Me To Knight, the harness horse known around the stables as “Junior,” has won two races at Saratoga Harness so far this racing season. He’s also had a close second, a fourth, and a couple of races where he didn’t do as well as usual.
This time, he’s back in the sixth race – the Open Challenge – and he drew a halfway-decent post position, #5. He’s also starting with 6-1 odds on the morning line, but as you know, that can change very quickly.
I started the season with a $100 bankroll, with each week betting $20 on Junior to win the race. Right now my bankroll is at $95. Let’s drop a Jackson on his nose and see how things go this week, shall we?
Of course, before I place my bet, I go over to the saratogacasino.com website and check out handicapper Mike Sardella’s picks for the race. And as usual this year … he doesn’t even have Pay Me To Knight in the top four of an eight-horse race. Ugh. Oh well. If Handicappers got it right all the time, the horse tracks would go out of business. So there’s that.
The morning line odds for Junior started at 6-1, but dropped down to 2-1 reaching 4-1 at post time.
Oh, and I realized that I haven’t really shown that many photos of Pay Me To Knight on this blog. So here’s what he looks like at the pre-race parade.

Yeah, I know, if I was at the track, I’d use one of my cameras for a better shot, but I’m still healing up from the surgeries, so you’ll just have to accept screen shots. 😀
And the race starts. Junior gets bottled up in traffic, and is sixth at the first quarter mile. Two horses pass him in the back, and then as the horses approach the half mile, it looks as if Junior has a nasty stumble. However, he didn’t break stride, but it did keep him in eighth place for most of the race until a late surge gave him a fifth-place finish. And another $20 goes out of my pocket. My bankroll for Junior is now down to $75.
We’ll get it next time, for sure. I have faith.
