The $20 Junior Challenge, May 11 2024

I hadn’t posted this in a while. Mostly because the blue roan harness trotter Pay Me To Knight (known around the barn as “Junior”) hasn’t exactly been up to snuff.

But even though I haven’t posted lately about my challenge … I still follow the rule of this year-long endeavor. $20 on his nose to win, every time he races.

So yesterday … I checked the Saratoga Casino website – first making sure that whatever hacked it was no longer hacking it – and wondering if track prognosticator Mike Sardella would actually give Junior a decent “he’s got a chance” review this week.

And surprisingly … Sardella did, picking Junior to finish 3rd in the 10th race, with the message, “We haven’t seen his best yet this season.”

Well, duh.

Okay. He’s in a field of seven horses, he’s in the position at the start of the race … and right off the bat, Pay Me To Knight gets mired in the middle of the pack. He’s caught in the “pocket” – he’s behind the lead horse, but there’s a horse coming up on his right, so Junior can’t pass and he can’t get out of his own lane. Ugh.

Coming around the final turn, Junior’s still in fourth place … and then … someone must have fed him that extra-special batch of oats and apples, because Junior took off like a rocket. Zipped from fourth to first place – and the win – in nothing flat.

Look at that. At the wire. Junior found an opening, and just took it like it was nobody else’s business.

And look who ended up in the winner’s circle.

Junior picked up the win at 4-5 odds, so a $20 bet netted me $38. It’s a win. And it’s Junior’s third win of the track season.

Let’s keep this going. I want another win next week. Another $20 on his big fuzzy nose.

Yeah. This feels so good. 😀
