How I restored a drive-in speaker and sold it at the BUILT charity auction

As I wind down my last few drive-in speaker restoration projects (apparently the neighbors were complaining about the smell of the caustic strippers I used to remove the old paint), I still have a couple of videos that needed finishing.

And one of those includes this rare Simplex “Mabte” miniature speaker that I actually acquired, of all places, at a drive-in flea market. No kidding. The Malta Drive-In in Saratoga Springs has a monthly flea market on its grounds; and although I didn’t expect to find anything there, this little treasure just happened to catch my eye.

So I restored it … filmed it … and then submitted it as an art entry to Historic Albany Foundation’s 2024 BUILT charitable auction. And it eventually sold, so the proceeds from that sale will help towards preservation and restoration of Albany’s historic architecture. Which, for me, is a good thing.

But yeah … I did film all the steps I took towards restoring this little guy.

And it’s now up on YouTube. So there’s that.

As I said … I really only have one or two more of these videos in the pipeline. Then I’ll work on some other restoration project.

The drive-in speaker project was fun while it lasted. But even so … I need to try more unique projects going forward.

That’s just me, I guess … 😀
