The Pittsburgh Steelers – actually, let me rephrase that – the 2025 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers – currently sport a 10-3 record and are on their way to a postseason berth. A win against the Philadelphia Eagles today will guarantee the Black and Gold a playoff spot, and will also give plenty of impetus to a home playoff game at Acrisure Stadium.
But here’s the thing. Pittsburgh HAS to win in Philadelphia today to guarantee this outcome.
And the last time Pittsburgh won a game in Philadelphia was … in 1965.
For on that day – October 24, 1965, to be precise – the Steelers defeated Philadelphia 20-14 at Franklin Field. After the Eagles got off to a 7-0 Start, Pittsburgh scored on a fumble recovery and an interception (one missed extra point) to go up 13-7. Both teams later traded touchdowns, but the Steelers left Philly with a win – one of only TWO victories Pittsburgh would claim that year (they went 2-12 on the season, ugh).
So, you’re wondering … in the past 58 years, how have the Steelers not won at least ONE game in the City of Brotherly Love in all those years? That should be at least 58 home and away contests, right?
Not quite.
See, in 1965 the Steelers and Eagles were part of the NFL’s Eastern Conference, which meant they played a home-and-away schedule each year. But in 1967, the Steelers were realigned (along with the New York Giants, Cleveland Browns and St. Louis Cardinals) into a “Century” division, which took them out of that home-and-away series with Philadelphia. And in 1970, the Steelers were realigned again, moving to the American Football Conference’s AFC Central Division with the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Oilers. And since this now meant Pittsburgh would have home-and-away games between natural and territorial rivals, it also meant that the Steelers would only play other NFL teams when the AFC Central Division interlocked their schedule with other conferences.
So in 1970, the Steelers lost 30-20 to the Eagles at Franklin Field. The next time Pittsburgh visited Philadelphia was (checks notes) (rechecks notes) 1979. The Eagles were now in Veterans Stadium, and the Steelers had a few Super Bowl rings on their fingers, but the end result was a 17-14 Eagles triumph.
We’ll get ’em next year … which was – holy crap, 1991? 23-14 loss at Veterans Stadium.
1997 – Pittsburgh heads home with a 23-20 loss.
The next visit to Philadelphia was in 2008. Eleven years later. It was a 15-6 victory for Philadelphia that day.
Wait another eight years, we’ll get better – yikes, we got pounded 34-3 in 2016?
Add on a 35-13 drubbing in 2022, and yeah, the Steelers are about as successful in Philadelphia as month-old scrapple.
I should note, however, that when the Eagles come to Pittsburgh, the results are much more in the Steelers’ favor. The Black and Gold have won four out of the last five meetings with the Eagles at Three Rivers Stadium / Heinz Field / Acrisure Stadium since 1994.
Right now Philadelphia leads the overall series 49-29 with 3 ties, and holds a 29-10-2 record in their home building. However, the Steelers have a chance at some point in time to tie Philadelphia for series wins in Pittsburgh, considering Philadelphia only has a 20-19-1 margin there.
But I’m not worrying about a game scheduled for 20-whatever. I need to win this game today.
And if we’re talking about winning averages … our Steelers starting quarterback Russell Wilson (wow, it feels so good to actually type a Steelers QB name in my blog) holds a 6-0 record against Philadelphia in his career. Russ has never lost against the Eagles in his NFL life.
And let’s keep THAT streak going … and end the one from 1965.
Barkley may impress, and try to prove you wrong. However, Sirianni hasn’t yet risen to Tomlin’s level. I’m with you.
