Hey Bob Labriola … challenge accepted. :D

Anyone who has even a cursory knowledge of my existence knows that the only professional football team I will support with my dying breath are the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don’t bleed red, I bleed black and gold. The national anthem isn’t “The Star Spangled Banner,” it’s “Renegade.” And yes, I have plenty of Terrible Towels at my reach.

Now one of my favorite current Steelers players is kicker Chris Boswell. Boswell signed with the Steelers back in 2015 after the team went through a string of injuries and poor play in the kicker position (it’s still legal in Pittsburgh to shout “FUCK JOSH SCOBEE” at the top of your lungs). Currently, Boswell holds a ton of Steelers records, including most successful field goals in a season, most career field goals of 50+ yards or more, and most games where he scored at least six field goals to outscore the opponents. Yeah. He’s earned his nicknames “The Wizard of Boz” and “The Boz God.”

So I had a wee bit of a thought. Boswell’s been the Steelers kicker for nearly ten years now. If someone took all his successful field goals and laid them end to end … would Boswell hold the record for most cumulative yardage for successful field goals?

So I did what any good Steelers fan does when confronted with a question like this. I contacted the Steelers’ Bob Labriola, who runs a column on Steelers.com called “Asked and Answered.” Maybe he knows.

And last week … he printed his response to my question.

Um … okay … sorry, man, didn’t mean to cross you on that question. Jeez, you would have thought I had suggested we re-sign Mitchell Trubisky or something. (blech I said Trubisky)

Well, if Bob Labriola thinks the question I asked is “meaningless,” then that’s gotta be a challenge, right?

And if you’ve read my blog for any microscopic length of time … you know that I DO NOT BACK DOWN FROM A CHALLENGE.

So … last night, I went to profootballreference.com, and I went through every single box score in which Chris Boswell scored at least one field goal.

EVERY SINGLE GAME.

Here’s what I came up with.

So … this means that during the regular season, Chris Boswell successfully converted 272 field goals. Laying them from end to end, he would have achieved 10,249 yards of flight. If he kicks another 311 yards of field goals in the 2025-26 season, he will have sent that pigskin SIX CUMULATIVE MILES INTO THE AIR.

And we can add another 760 yards of cumulative field goal distance in the postseason.

As for my original question, during the 2024-25 season, Boswell may have fallen short of the most field goals kicked in a single season, but he damn near sent that ball into orbit, with 1,638 yards of combined distance. Kinda helps that Boswell has that knack of booting 50+ field goals straight and true.

There we go. Game, set and match.

I’m telling you … I do like a challenge.
