Last week, I took a chance and ordered the brand new 50th anniversary Terrible Towel – the calling card of every true Pittsburgh Steelers fan. All I had to do was order it at the very second that 100,000 other Steelers fans tried to hve the same idea as me. The purchase line opened at 10:00 a.m. I placed my order at approximately 10:02 a.m. By 10:15 a.m., they were all sold out. all 5,000 sequentially numbered Towels.
I got lucky, for sure.
But what number towel did I get? This could be interesting.
Oh, here comes the mailman with my package. And wow is this towel big.
It’s wrapped in a cellophane bag and has an embedded hangtag. So I’m not taking the Towel out of the bag, nor am I removing the hangtag. Collectability, don’tcha know.
Anyway … this Towel is a beauty. Fully-stitched embroidery. And yes, it’s sequentially numbered. Take a lookie.

This is the 50th anniversary of the beloved Pittsburgh fan accessory,
Here’s a brief history of how the Terrible Towel came to fruition.
Okay, so let me check out that sequential number.

Well now. I can associate the “10” with several Steelers players, Plaxico Burress, Santonio Holmes, all of those – but I’m going to say that the “10” on that towel stands for Kordell Stewart. The legendary “slash” quarterback / running back / wide receiver who electrified the Steelers faithful with his incredible play action.
For the “9” in the jersey, there’s no question. It has to be the Steelers’ field goal kicking legend, ,Chris Boswell. I mean, check out these highlights from last year. The man kicks field goals like I drink Red Bull.
But number 4. This is difficult. The only “4” players on the Steelers roster were punters and third-string QB’s.
That was until the team signed DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. Now Metcalf wore #14 throughout his career, but because the Steelers at the time already had a player who sports #14, Metcalf opted to take jersey number 4.
It’s a sign, I tell you. It’s a sign from the heavens above.
The 2025-26 Pittsburgh Steelers are headed to the Super Bowl to get that 7th ring.
And they’re bringing Terrible Towels with them all the way.
So it shall be written. So it shall be done.
And in the words of Myron Cope … Double Yoi!
Nice catch!
