In a college music theory class, I learned that avant-garde composer John Cage once crafted something called 4’33”, a performance that featured no instruments. Just silence. For four minutes and thirty-three seconds.
And I initially thought … that’s a bit of a cop-out. Like telling your teacher that you wrote your homework on invisible ink.
But the fact is, 4’33” forces you to hear sounds that you normally would ignore – atmospheric sounds that were previously obscured by traditional musical instruments. The simplicity proved complex.
Case in point. As we approach WrestleMania weekend – when most professional wrestling fans watch WWE’s two-night extravaganza, and people like me just wait a week for AEW’s Dynasty pay-per-view …
I’m going to show you a match that occurred during a Wrestlemania weekend several years ago. In fact, it was part of one of a multitude of independent matches that took place in the New York City area during WWE’s WrestleMania weekend.
I bring you a full-length match in which “The Invisible Man” faces off against his evil brother, “Invisible Stan.”
No, seriously. It’s two wrestlers who are invisible. You can’t see them. It’s John Cena’s wet dream. 😀
Thankfully, you CAN see the referee – future AEW referee Bryce Remsburg – as he actually calls the match between the two – um – combatants.
And while this looks more like a simple goof-off match … take note at Remsburg’s actions throughout. He’s calling the contest as if this was a traditional squared circle battle, and eventually we approach the “suspension of disbelief” phase – that phase where it’s not just actors playing the role, but we instead believe that Remsburg is emotionally invested in a match between two puffs of sentient ether.
So check this out. It’s from the small independent company Game Changer Wrestling. A match between The Invisible Man (cheers) and Invisible Stan (booo). No word on whether there was an invisible Hatpin Mary in the front row.
Electically twisted, and probably disappointing for any autograph hounds.
I think I’d prefer a women’s match.
