A few weeks ago, I worked on my newest latch hook rug project. This canvas was originally sold as part of a 1977 kit by Bernat; yarn skeins and tools for trimming the yarn were all sold separately.
And rather than source the original colors from 1977, I went with modern colors and skeins.
At right is what the rug is SUPPOSED to look like when finished. Or at least that’s what the directions say it should look like.
But I’m working from different colors, so the results will certainly vary.
And, to be honest, a project like this begs the question.
What is a 62-year-old man doing making latch hooked rugs?
Let me explain.
These latched hook rugs – whether they come from store-bought kits or from my own photography – are tools for me to find peace and tranquility.
Any time there’s stress in my life – I can use these arts and crafts – including photography and restoration and other modification projects – to center myself when my world feels like lo mein in a hurricane.
And lately, my life has gone through tremendous stress and turmoil. Relationship failures. Health scares. The extortion and abusive conditions of our world today.
And if I just grab a canvas and some yarn … or grab my Nikons and go outside … or grab my <fill in the blank> and go <fill in the blank but don’t fill in the blank with some dirty thought, get your mind out of the gutter> – I’ll feel better. I will I know I will.
And over the weekend … not only did I hook this canvas as often as I could, while watching an Upstairs, Downstairs marathon on Tubi (I still say that Downton Abbey owes the creators of Upstairs, Downstairs a ton of royalties) – I went from this …

To this.

Wow.
Left edge is complete.
Right edge is complete.
And after checking my math … I’m approximately 4,900 yarn pulls away from completion on this little project.
And then it dawns on me. I have a good chance of getting this rug complete in time for Competition Season.
Which energizes me. I’ve got a shot at this.
Let’s keep going. 😀

We’re left to wonder: “What will Chuck name this?”
(If you’re considering suggestions, I humbly submit “Checkmate” – from the opening scene of the early 60s’ Sebastian Cabot same name tv show.)
And if it’s any help, I only just this morning learned of a tool to “find peace and tranquility,” especially considering this week’s forecast – a rain drum.
