The Hermit Crab Shell

The last time I was on a macro photography kick, I stopped at a pet store with the idea of finding something that would look fantastic in a close-up, detailed image. I purchased a hermit crab shell – hey, you can’t go wrong with a spiral shell, can you? – and took it home.

Figured I’d use it as my next macro image.

Well, the last time I took macro shots was about two years ago. Then I worked on other projects, and packed away my medical Nikkor lens.

The other day, I broke out the lens to photograph that IBM element ball, and liked the final product.

You know … I still have that crab shell somewhere … somewhere … over here, maybe … over there, maybe …

Damn, I gotta clean this place.

Found it.

So let’s give this a close-up shot. Try my luck here.

And in the end … this came out.

Hermit Crab Shell. Nikon Df camera, Medical Nikkor 120mm 1:4 lens, 65 images combined in focus stack. (c) 2026 Chuck Miller, all rights reserved.

Dang. That’s nice. Very, very nice.

I mean, it’s not so nice that it surpasses my element ball photo … but if I have a chance, I could enter this one in Competition Season as a secondary submission.

Let me keep thinking on this.

And let me keep finding treasures that will look spectacular at gigantic size.
