Week 7 of the $2,500 Elbo Room Trivia Tournament

Making my way in the world today takes everything I’ve got.  Taking a break from all my worries sure would help a lot.

Wouldn’t I like to get away…

And sometimes I want to go where everybody knows my name…

And they’re always glad I came…

Okay, I’m not in Boston, Sam Malone’s not my bartender, Carla’s not my waitress – but I am at Elbo Room, and it’s time for another week of trivia competition.  I don’t have Norm and Cliff and Frasier as teammates – but I do have Jeremy and Alexis, and that’s much better as far as I’m concerned.

And after I’ve gone through a patch of rough so bad that even I don’t want to blog about it… it’s good to get back in the Elbo Room and play some competitive team trivia.  Takes my mind off my troubles.

This was a good round for us.  We hit the first eight questions without any misses – including naming the current Maxim cover girl (Avril Lavigne), knowing the interstate that goes from Los Angeles to Seattle (I-5), the year World War II began (1939) and identifying the city where American Bandstand started (Philadelphia) – actually, that’s TWO times that the failed show American Dreams has helped me win a trivia round.

We tore through several of the other questions, nailing three of the quadruple bonus questions by naming the last four teams to defeat the Phillies in a playoff series (we had the Yankees, Blue Jays and Orioles, we missed the Rockies); and we also nailed the last NFL team Mike Ditka coached (the Saints), the country that surrounds San Marino (Italy, thanks Alexis), and the westernmost Scandinavian country (Norway, thanks Jeremy).

At the final question, we were in the lead with 134 points, but several teams were within striking distance.

The final question was on American Geography.  Thank God it wasn’t Vice Presidents again.

Since we were in the lead, we bet the customary (2x-y)+1=BET (where X is the second-place score and Y is our score – bear with me, I haven’t used algebra in a while).  Using the formula above, if we got the answer right, we would lock out everyone else.

“In what state will you find Bald Eagle Mountain?”

We were scratching our heads on this one.  None of us had an idea.  The best we could come up with was that maybe Bald Eagle Mountain might have nesting spots for real bald eagles, so I went with Alaska.  So did several other teams.

The correct answer – was Pennsylvania.  And one team had that correct, and took the five points.

The winning team currently calls themselves the Family Jewels.

Actually, it’s the same team formerly known as Da Bears.

Yes, it’s Da Bears, the same “Da Bears” that stormed out of the Elbo Room about five or six weeks ago, after one of their team members cursed trivia host General James up and down about people using cell phones, and promising to never come back to Elbo Room.  I guess “never” was just long enough for them to earn five more points in the playoffs. Stern Fans had a safe bet, and took second place and three playoff points.

Third place – and the playoff point earned therewith – went to Street Academy.  We took a playoff point, and stayed strong.  The (2x-y)+1=BET formula worked – only in that when we missed, so many other teams bet the farm and had the wrong answer, we still had enough to claim a playoff point.

So here’s the standings after seven weeks. The top eight teams are listed above the “CUT LINE”; if the tournament ended today, those would be the eight teams that can play in the championship round.  And right now, any team who joins up in mid-season would have to either nail a win right off the bat, or put together a couple of second-place finishes to get on the board.

Trivia Team Name Points
1 Schooled 10
T-2 Street Academy (+1) 9
T-2 Skidmarks 9
T-2 Sneaky Pete’s 9
5 Da Bears (+5) 8
6 Stern Fans (+3) 7
7 Kramer’s Flames 6
8 Just the Tips 4
9 Woo Hoo a Go Go 1

And only the top eight teams will make it into the final tournament round. Any team in ninth place or below will not make the cut. So teams now have to keep playing and avoid the dreaded cut line.

Seven weeks down. Thirteen more weeks to go.
