At this time last year, I went through all my photographs and tried to find the best ones from the past twelve months. So now we’re in a new year, and once again it’s time for me to look back at how things turned out. I spent the year working both in digital and in slide film, both with my Nikon D700 and my film cameras – the Kiev-19, the Nikkormat FTn, my Ansco Cadet, the Rolleiflex and the Kodak Brownie Super 27.
So once again, I chose what I thought were my ten personal favorites from 2010. Here they are. I hope you enjoy them.
COCA-COLA RELIEVES FATIGUE, SOLD EVERYWHERE 5c
July 7, 2010, Holga 120N with Fuji 200 film
Probably my favorite of the “ghost sign” photos I took last year, and my first attempt to create a “split-film” picture, with two rolls of film clogged into a Holga 120N.
NIPPER’S POLAR PANORAMA
June 3, 2010, shot with Nikon D700
There it is. I’m on the roof of Arnoff Moving and Storage, photographing the RCA Victor trademark and turning it into its own little planetary image.
THE RAILSPLITTER
August 22, 2010, Nikkormat FTn with Kodachrome film
That weed has probably spent years fighting its way through the rotted railroad track, and it eventually burst through. Which gave me the opportunity to photograph it in the dawn of summertime.
STAR TRAILS IN ST. AGNES CEMETERY
May 17, 2010, Nikon D700 with Kiev MIR wideangle lens
This award winner took months of planning and setup – and, when it finally came out, I realized I had taken more than just a photograph.
REFLECTION: THE LIGHTHOUSE AT PEGGY’S COVE
May 1, 2010, Nikon D700 with Nikkor E-series wideangle lens
Arguably one of the most photographed lighthouses in North America. I was very fortunate to capture the beauty of the lighthouse just before the sun rose.
DESTINATION VOYAGE ROUGE ET BLEU
April 3, 2010, Kiev-19 with Kodachrome 40
You can see the headlights and brakelights of cars as they drove past Rue St-Louis through the arch of Quebec’s old city. Probably the best shot I’ve ever taken with Kodachrome 40; I’m still amazed at how it turned out.
MAIL POUCH TOBACCO BARN, DUTCHESS COUNTY
April 17, 2010, Nikon D700
Capturing a well-preserved and unrestored Mail Pouch Barn sign is tricky. There aren’t that many in the Northeast. This is one of the few that have survived to this day.
MORE MEN WEAR BOND CLOTHES
February 4, 2010. Shot with Nikon D700.
This picture got lost in the shuffle, but it still has a special place in my heart. It’s one of the few long exposure shots I’ve taken with my digital camera, rather than with film.
NIAGARA FALLS FIREWORKS IN KODACHROME
November 26, 2010. Shot with Kiev-19, Kodachrome 64.
As an era in film history ends, it is captured by the fireworks over the most photographed waterfalls ever.
DERRICK ROWLAND, CHAMPIONSHIP COACH
July 16, 2010, Nikon D700
Derrick Rowland is Albany basketball. He’s won two championships as a player, and this year he earned a title with the IBL’s Albany Legends. Celebrate, Derrick. You earned it.
These are some of the photos I’ve enjoyed shooting during calendar year 2010. Of course, one of my new year’s resolutions is to improve on my skills, so that when January 1, 2012 rolls around, I can put up ten photos from 2011 that are superior to the ones I’ve got up in this blog post.
Great pictures, always a pleasure to gaze upon! I also enjoyed the Monarch butterfly with the Queen Anne’s Lace picture, not shown here today. I dubbed it “Royalty” when I saw it.. I.love that pic !!
