Super Bowl XLVI “Prop Bets”

There’s a story, rather apocryphal, that someone actually put $5,000 on a Super Bowl “Prop Bet” a few years ago – he wagered that the first play of the game would result in a kickoff return for a touchdown.  He had his friends all over at his house, there were snacks and beers and a great party atmosphere.

And sure enough, Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears ran the first kickoff of the game all the way to the end zone.  The guy hosting the Super Bowl party?  He made a ton of money on that play.  I guess it helps that you know that if Devin Hester’s catching the ball off a kickoff, he’s gonna take it to the house every time.

The Devin Hester wager is a Super Bowl “prop bet.”  You’re not betting on which team will win the game – you’re betting on everything else IN the game.  Everything from whether the coin flip will be heads or tails, to whether someone will curse near an unprotected microphone.

So if you’re going to take these bets… remember, take them only as friendly wagers.  I’m not advocating gambling, and if you do have a gambling problem, call 1-800-GAMBLER and get help.

Are you ready?  Here are the bets.

1. Will Kelly Clarkson sing “The Star Spangled Banner” in more than or less than 90 seconds?

2. Will the first Super Bowl beverage commercial be for a beer or a soft drink?

3. Who will score more points on Super Bowl Sunday – the New York Giants or LeBron James? (the Heat are playing Toronto that day)

4. Will a team score a safety in the game, and if so, which team?

5. What quarterback that currently ISN’T in the Super Bowl will get mentioned first by the announcers – Peyton Manning, Tony Romo or Tim Tebow?

6. During the halftime show, how many costume changes will Madonna go though – the line is 2 1/2.

7. Which of these penalties will occur first – an offsides, a false start, a pass interference or a facemask?

8. How many times during the game will we see a replay of David Tyree’s helmet catch?  Over-under is 1 1/2.

9. What color Gatorade will the winning coach be doused in?  Color choices are green, red, yellow or “the field.”

10. How many times during the Super Bowl will Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth mention the NBC television show “The Voice”?  Over/under is 4 1/2 times.

Okay, everyone… have at it.  Feel free to comment on these choices, or to add your own Super Bowl-pertinent “prop bet.”
