So here’s the deal. According to this article on PetaPixel, a man named Jonathan Dandrow has a major disdain for traffic cameras, especially the ones that take pictures of your license as you run a red light, speed past a stop sign, or try to break the sound barrier in a 55 mph zone.
To that effort, he has produced a product called the noPhoto, a device that will supposedly defeat any traffic camera out there. How does it work? Apparently once the license plate frame’s sensor detects a camera flash, it triggers two xenon flashes – one on either side of the license plate frame – to light up, quickly brightening the license plate and rendering it unphotographable.

So let me ask you, my dear readers. Would you ever purchase something like this for your car, or do you think that such a device is nothing more than an attempt to circumvent law enforcement?

My personal opinion, if we all just followed the road rules, we wouldn’t need to stop cameras from taking a picture of our plate. I only drive about 5 miles to work each way, but if I had a dollar for every person that I see run a red light in that short trip, I wouldn’t have to work.

Courts are continuing to find red light cameras unconstitutional (and they are total violations of the 4th Amendment). Anything you can do to fight back is okay in my book (as long as you don’t put anyone else in jeopardy). If this product really works I’d buy one out of sheer principle even though there really aren’t any red light cameras around here.
Did you know half the fine from a red light camera ticket goes to the manufacturer of the camera?! These things are scams. Studies show they do not deter bad driving, either. Just fleecing of the community by government and corporation simultaenously.

In California (where they do use red light cameras), it is illegal to use or sell a product that impairs the reading of a license plate by electronic devices, such as red-light cameras and toll booth cameras. The fine for obscuring a plate is $146 (as of 2008), and the fine for selling such a product is $900.

Just curious Chad9976, the 4th Amendment refers to unreasonable searches and seizures, how is something that you do in plain sight on public streets protected? The cameras aren’t digging through the glove box or under the seats. If a hidden camera snapped a pic of someone mugging you at an ATM and the police used it to catch the thief, would you have an issue?
I’m against speed cameras as well, but more because they’re another use of technology to kill jobs. If I’m going to get a ticket, I’d rather it was handed to me.

There is no doubt that like California, all other states with red light cams will follow suit on fines for intentionally obscuring.

An additional thought: This thing had better be durable. I don’t know about you, but in my neighborhood, I’ve watched countless people try to shoe-horn themselves in and out of parking spaces, frequently giving other people’s bumpers (and license plate frames) a tap (or a crunch). Both my license plates are bent to heck from this. Trying to imagine somebody shelling out $350 (projected retail price) each time this happens.

Definitely! Living in Washington D.C. where the cameras are rampant. I would gladly buy something to cover my license plate frame!
