I keep hoping that at some point, the people in charge of artificial intelligence will use it for something that would benefit the world. You know … how to eliminate famine. Or how to eliminate poverty. Or how to eliminate terminal disease.
Unfortunately, that’s not happening.
Because these data centers and digital farms are instead creating AI slop to garner online clicks.
And one of these AI slop factories is the online creator Lyreca.
From what I’ve deduced so far, Lyreca is supposedly some cute 20-ish girl who can sing and dance and looks like a knockout in whatever she wears. Maybe it’s a “proof of concept” as to how to create realistic-looking AI product that allegedly could fool the average viewer …
Yeah, I don’t know. I look at this and I think … how many gallons of water went to cool down the data center that built this creation?
Lyreca’s YouTube channel has this description.

Jeez, it sounds less like a YouTube channel and more like a pharmaceutical commercial. “If LYRECA gives you migraines that last more than four hours, contact a physician immediately.”
One thing I noticed about Lyreca is that she has an affinity for the 1960’s bubblegum track “Sugar Sugar.” Because there’s at least a dozen or so different YouTube clips where she shuffle-dances to it.
Sometimes she dances by herself, sometimes she has backup dancers who, of course, are in perfect synchronization with her moves. Because it’s not like AI can handle anything different.
Or better yet, how about Lyreca doing those same shuffle moves with Charlie Chaplin and Elvis Presley? Because, yeah, nothing says tacky like having AI bring the King and the Tramp together as background dancers for some cutesy artificial shuffle girl. Meh.
Seriously. Even when she’s dancing by herself, it’s almost as if she only has one set of dance moves and she recycles them in EVERY SINGLE VIDEO CLIP. All in calf-high white go-go boots. Sure.
A few weeks ago, “Lyreca” was reconstituted as a six-piece all-female rockabilly band. And boy did that AI generator work overtime. Lyreca sometimes mouths the lyrics, sometimes the lyrics don’t sync up, and sometimes she just stops singing while the vocals continue. The keyboard player is so talented, she can play the piano without ever pressing down on any of the keys. I’m not even sure the guitar players are playing proper chords. And the sax player must have a lot of breath control, because she’s playing the sax without even taking a breath – or, for that matter, actually pressing the proper buttons and valves on the sax.
Ah, artificial intelligence.
And if that wasn’t impressive enough, apparently all the girls can shuffle-dance to “Sugar Sugar” as well.
Oh, and then there’s Lyreca’s “live concert” – where she performs an ABBA-ripoff called “One Way Ticket” with a band that seems like they drew their moveset from some old Hanna-Barbera 1970’s mystery show. And again, Lyreca has this habit of either singing without moving her mouth, or her mouth not synchronizing with the vocals. And let’s combine all that with the totally enthusiastic crowd who are cheering her on like it’s a Taylor Swift concert.
Look, I get it. Lyreca is designed to be a tangy piece of eye candy. But even in that eye candy, there’s still that AI-generated uncanny stare that just can’t be correctly copied. The background dancers seem more like the “free characters” in an online video game. And the backgrounds look too perfect – for example in the clip below, it looks as if someone took every possible cliche about the 1950’s from Happy Days and Grease and Hairspray and threw them all into a Cuisinart.
And yes, the camera has a rather unhealthy stare at Lyreca’s AI-generated legs. As if it’s hoping to see some sort of AI-generated upskirt shot into her USB connector.
And I’m sure if I looked hard enough, I’d probably find another Lyreca take on “Sugar Sugar,” where she’s doing the same go-go dance moves.
To be totally honest … if I want to see an artificial creation perform “Sugar Sugar,” I have more palatable options out there.
Besides … there was already one artificial band who will always hold claim to “Sugar Sugar.”
This one.
And if I want to watch drop-dead hotties dancing to “Sugar Sugar,” there’s always this classic clip from Top of the Pops. So there.
There is no way in HELL I am going to look at that.
I will now pull up the MonaLisa Twins with John Sebastian playing “Did you ever have to make up your mind?”
Followed by a Carly Simon marathon to erase the memory of Imitation Talent being allowed to exist.
Or maybe I’ll lapse into a Susannah McCorkle coma.
