Let me introduce you to Evan Welcher of Arcadia, New York. Nice upstanding citizen, eh?
Not really. As far as I’m concerned, this is the front-runner for the most disgusting slimeball of 2013.
Because a couple of weeks ago, he killed his dog.
With a rifle.
Shooting at the dog five times.
You heard me. Five times.
According to this story from the Times of Wayne County newspaper, and from witness statements and veterinary reports, Welcher was originally charged with Misdemeanor Cruelty to Animals. The charges were later increased to Felony Animal Cruelty.
According to the newspaper, on May 25th:
- Welcher and a friend returned to Welcher’s home, to find that Welcher’s American Bulldog Queenie had gotten into the garbage bags, strewing trash all over the floor.
- Welcher grabbed Queenie and started beating and punching the dog. The beatings continued throughout the house, as Welcher vented all his frustration on the canine.
- At one point, Welcher threw Queenie on a bed and continued to beat and abuse the dog. During the altercation, Queenie apparently soiled Welcher’s bed.
- That set Welcher off. Welcher tied the dog down, retrieved a rifle – and shot the dog in the eye.
- The bullet should have killed Queenie. It didn’t.
- Despite attempts by Welcher’s friend and Welcher’s mother to stop the violence, Welcher shot Queenie a few more times. Including a shot in the heart.
Yeah. Real classy.
So what does this person state to the police in his defense? And it’s not like Welcher hasn’t dealt with the police before – the guy has a rap sheet that includes DWI and resisting arrest. As for Queenie … you have to read Welcher’s statement. If your stomach doesn’t start turning afterward…
“The dog was getting to be old-10 years. (Contrary to the veterinarian’s report, who claimed the dog was three years old) It was always getting sick and making a mess in the house. I didn’t have the $350 to bring it to the vet to have it put down the right way. I grew up on a farm, it doesn’t bother me to do that.”
Shaking my head. I’ve got nothing on this. The guy beats his dog, ties the dog up, shoots the dog FIVE TIMES – and then says it’s because he didn’t have $350 to put the dog down properly?
You don’t have $350 – I sure hope you’ve got $10,000 for your bail. You miserable low-life punk.
By the way, there’s already a change.org petition requesting the maximum penalty allowed by law for what Welcher did to Queenie.
There’s probably going to be some people out there who say, “Well, why didn’t Welcher’s friend step in and try to stop the carnage?” Okay, first of all, Welcher is holding a rifle. And he’s shown that he’s not afraid to use it. What’s to stop this punk from turning the rifle on something – or someone – else? I mean, he’s already willing to kill a dog…
And I gotta say… whatever the maximum criminal penalty might be for what Evan Welcher did on that sorry day…

An eye for an eye… perhaps this guy should be punished in the EXACT same way he tortured Queenie. I wish his mother or friend had called the police when he started the abuse. Sure seems like they could have!

This makes me sick and feel so badly for that animal. I hope this piece of trash gets some charges that actually stick to him. People like this should not be allowed to even own pets, period.
This posting reminds me of a blog posting Mr. Huber reposted up since it was so popular – “do it yourself euthanasia”
So many of these so called loving dog/cat owners posted that they did not have the money to take them to the vet for a humane death of being put to sleep.
My solution is simple – stop spending your money on daily nonsense, have a small savings for your dog. OR if you cannot afford the vet bill, take it the humane society and they will put it down with dignity. The stories I read about people shooting their dogs, suffocating them made my skin crawl.
Sorry for the rant. But this story also made me think about that blog posting as well.

THIS IS A LIE! THIS BLOG IS NOTHING BUT A LIE! Where did you get this ridiculous story? He shot the dog because he got into his trash. What kind of idiot are you? Get your facts straight before you put it ino print. It had nothing to do with $360 bucks. The dog got into the trash all over the house and he beat it from room to room brought him into the basement and shot it with his rifle.

Ms. Campbell – The reference to $350 was Evan Welcher’s statement to the police about his reasons for shooting the dog. Yes, I do know that the dog was shot because of getting into Welcher’s garbage and messing on Welcher’s bed, I know that. I’m just saying that Welcher claimed – to the police – in a written statement – that he put the dog down because he couldn’t afford to pay someone $350 to do so. Whatever reason Welcher gave, it wasn’t a good enough reason to do what he did to that poor dog. And by the way, that quote about the $350 – that came directly from the same article you’ve linked to in your blog comments.

It had nothing to do with $350 it had to do with the trash and he beat it shot it and thats it. Its all over the TV and nothing said about money. his friend did nothing and his friend is as guilty as he is may they all die in a raging house fire. If we are lucky it will trap them in the house and they suffer a long painful death

Are you dumb, blind, or having a blonde moment? Maybe all three. In the article that you linked, there is a quote from Evan Wechler that states: Welcher, IN [b]HIS[/b] STATEMENT TO POLICE said: The dog was getting to be old-10 years. [b]I didn’t have the $350 to bring it to the vet to have it put down the right way.[/b] I grew up on farm, it doesn’t bother me to do that.” So he is justifying his abuse and torture of the dog by saying he didn’t have the $350 to have the vet do it. Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing.

Diane Campbell, are you okay? You keep posting the same comment but obviously didn’t read the article which clearly states that the dog got in the trash.

This is a disgusting story and unfortunately there is no adequate punishment for such offenses. we’ll be lucky if he gets jail time more than a year.
Hopefully the police are taking notes because this guy will kill people, if he hasn’t already.

I have to skim to avoid being ill over yet another animal abuse story, but I am sure a good number of country folk and hunters dispose of their animals this way. Trapping, hunting, shooting, dogs tied to bumpers, etc., seem to be a way of life in certain parts of Upstate NY.
We have to make up our minds: Do we handle abuse situations appropriately or not? Do we continue to ignore much of this horror? Do we allow 14,000 cats and dogs (every day in U.S.) to be mass-slaughetered because we were too indifferent to spay/neuter?

Welcher beat brutally beat the dog and then proceeded (according to the eye witness) to go upstairs and get a rifle and shoot the dog that was tied up! The witness said himself that Queenie ran to him and Welcher grabbed her and proceeded to beat her . I’m sorry I understand the blame completely lies with the scum welcher but damn..couldn’t the guy at least try to reason with him? Try something? The mother..okay..fine. From what I understand she is a victim of his abuse as well. But I just can’t get over the friend. He pussied out..plain and simple. This guy sounds like a psycho but I have a feeling he wouldn’t have shot his mother or his friend. Animal abusers are cowards. They never stand up to people They fight back..what fun is that?

The penalties need to be harsher but first we have to get them to dish out the current maximum. Whats the sense of asking for more time if they aren’t going to get it.2 years sucks but we can always keep our fingers crossed for some good ol’ fashion prison justice. 😉

I also started a paper petition that many people have signed to make sure EVAN WELCHER get’s the maximum sentence. He is a piece of crap scumbag that deserves to get the same beat down and torture he bestowed upon poor innocent Queenie. I’d love 5 minutes alone with that coward! There is also a petition for Phoenix Law that mandates people like Evan Welcher get psychiatric evaluations and 5 year prison sentences.
