Having fun on the NYC Subway

Jessica Kitrick, who posts some excellent vintage “Fools’ Gold” movie reviews on her LadySpaz BlipTV channel, shared this cool clip on her Tumblr account.  Apparently in New York City, the subway conductors are required to point to signs at every terminal stop, to prove that they’re paying attention on their job.  So… some people decided to hold up some signs and make the conductors laugh.  Take a looksee.

Ha ha ha ha…

Now of course, my idealized image of the New York City Subway goes all the way back to 1976… about a song that goes all the way back to 1870. That, of course, would be Klaatu’s waycool song “Sub-Rosa Subway.”

ANd of course, there’s the greatest song ever written about the NYC Subway system… Duke Ellington’s “Take the ‘A’ Train.”

Now check this footage out.  It’s a waycool sax battle, as these two saxophone players bounce through everything from Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” to the “I Like to Move It” song from Madagascar.

Don’t have a saxophone at your disposal? Doesn’t matter. You can bust out a beat-box version of the theme from “Beverly Hills Cop” and get the crowd revved up.

How’s about this clip? Two passengers – one with a set of bongos, one with a ukulele – have an impromptu jam session on the subway. Totally worth the cost of a MetroCard fare… and then some. 🙂

This clip is totally way awesome, as an improv group restages scenes from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope on the subway car. Thankfully, this group did not restage scenes from The Taking of Pelham 123.

Hope you all found these clips entertaining, inspiring, and smile-inducing.
