Last week, during the Wimbledon tennis tournament, something happened in the middle of a women’s doubles match.
And a week later, it’s still the talk of tennis.
First off, the match featured Kim Clijsters and Rennae Stubbs, facing off against Andrea Jaeger and Conchita Martinez. I’m sure you’ve heard of some of those tennis players at some point in time, right? I mean, Clijsters has four Grand Slam championships and was once ranked #1 in the world …
Anyway, the doubles match is progressing well, and eventually the ladies start having fun with the game. Clijsters hits an ace, then goes over and high-fives the fans – and even signs an autograph mid-match. Andrea Jaeger hits a winner, then goes over to the fans and swigs a bottle of water.
Then came the moment.
With the second set tied at four games apiece, and Clijsters and Stubbs up 40-love in the game, Clijsters starts calling her serves. She asks Stubbs – quite loudly – if the next shot should be down the middle or wide.
At that moment, Chris Quinn, a fan in the stands, shouts out that Clijsters should serve a body shot.
Which caught everyone off guard.
So what do you do when a heckler recommends your next tennis serve?
You make the fan get out of the stands, stand on the court, and take the body shot himself. And just for good measure, since it is a Wimbledon tennis tournament, you make sure the guy is dressed in all white. Even if you have to lend him a skirt and top from your own gym bag.
At this point in the match, it’s all for fun, and everybody involved had a great time goofing on the heckler. And Chris Quinn even managed to return one of Kim Clijsters’ serves – although I think it was more of a “I just had my racket in the right spot and her serve bounced off it” move.
Here’s the doubles match, and Quinn’s adventures begin at the 12:00 mark.
And as funny as this moment is, Quinn was allowed to keep the skirt. I mean, it’s pretty much stretched out beyond any use Clijsters could ever imagine…
And an epilogue – the Irish Examiner reported that Quinn is auctioning off the skirt, with the proceeds earmarked for cancer research. Way cool all around.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Clijsters and Stubbs defeated Jaeger and Martinez 6-2, 7-5.
