Are you feeling … adventurous?
Possibly a bit … demented?
Looking for something … off the wall?
Well, get yourself some popcorn, buy a soda, and step into the theater. Because we’ve got some classic cartoon shorts, just before our feature film tonight.
What I’m about to show you are some very unique and mind-altering cartoon shorts. Some of these have appeared in animated festivals; others were part of midnight movie cartoon cavalcades. All of them are a bit … shall we say … odd.
A warning – many of these are not safe for work. And the majority of these are probably not safe for family viewing, either. Just to make sure we’ve got that out of the way.
So let’s pay our ticket price, get our ticket stub, and sit in the first row for…
BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA
Try not to spoil the twist ending on this one. The meeting between Bambi and Godzilla is … shall we say … a smash.
THE CAT CAME BACK
A clip from the National Film Board of Canada’s archives, this twisted little feature won several awards along its journey.
THE BUTTERFLY BALL AND GRASSHOPPER’S FEAST
Singer Roger Glover rounded up some of his friends to record this song, and then had it animated as a music video / movie clip.
Okay, if you can handle all this … now let’s check out some of these more “NFSW” movie clips.
THANK YOU MASK MAN
In Thank You Mask Man, comedian Lenny Bruce’s ribald take on the Lone Ranger’s relationship with Tonto is animated in this short satirical sketch.
BRING ME THE HEAD OF CHARLIE BROWN
This piece, animated by a CalArts student, merges the sweet innocence of Peanuts cartoons with the ultra-violence of a Sam Peckinpaugh movie. Good thing it was animated in black and white … I don’t need to see Peanuts blood all over the place.
And now … for our feature film…
ALLEGRO NON TROPPO
If you want to see a demented, twisted, alternate take on the classic Fantasia, this is your film. Complete with takes on Ravel’s Bolero, some Slavic dances, and a very mind-expanding finale. “Fee-naaah-lay… he he he he he…”
Oh, and don’t forget to pick up your popcorn carton and soda cup when you leave the theater. Make it easier on the users and cleaners prior to the next feature, shall we?
