So last night, the Albany Patroons held off a surging Jamestown Jackals to take a 97-94 win, improve their record to 6-0 on the season, tying them with the Kansas City Tornadoes for first place in the TBL.
This is good.
Alonzo Murphy, one of the Patroons’ entry draft picks, popped a double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds. Meanwhile, the big man, 6’8″ Darius Paul, knocked down 26 points on the hight, and Josh Cameron came off the bench to score 16.
Jamestown made a last-minute run, but the Patroons held them off in the final seconds.
And once again …at the last minute … the Armory general manager asked me to perform the National Anthem.
Why does this happen?
It certainly goes back to last season, when the Patroons were in a pivotal Game 3 in a best-of-three playoff match with the Ohio Bootleggers. No national anthem singer was scheduled, and there’s that one fan out there who thinks he can sing … but he can’t. Not in the least.
And both teams were standing on the court, waiting for an anthem singer.
Okay … sometimes you gotta take one for the team. I went from the announce table to the center of the court and sang the anthem.
Patroons won that night.
Opening night this season – I’m over at the broadcast table when I get a message that my vocal cords are needed again.
You do what the team needs of you. I took the microphone and sang again. Albany stomped on the New York Court Kings in a 60-point victory.
And last night …
Did it again. The video only captures the first half, but you get the gist.
The game continued on. And I should note that one of the Jamestown players, Austin Hamilton, wore a jersey with a 21 on the back – and a 12 on the front. That caused a bit of confusion with us, as we didn’t see a 12 on Jamestown’s roster – but then when Hamilton rushed past us with the ball, we could see he was wearing 21.
I’m presuming the uniform manufacture had a typographical moment with the silkscreen machine. 🙂
Too bad he didn’t finish with 21 points and 12 rebounds… 😀
But let’s face it … there’s only one entity in our lives that should be a 21 and a 12.
But yeah, this is good. The Patroons are tied for the top of the standings, and we’re getting better as the season progresses.
This definitely works for me.
