Carissima, bitches… Hamilton College advances to the Sweet 16! #backourblue

Back in the 1980’s, when I was a student at Hamilton College, we had one of the toughest men’s basketball teams in Division III.  Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to show off our skills in the Division III NCAA tournament, because we were in a conference called NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference), which forbid its teams from playing in any tournaments that operated one week past the team’s last regularly scheduled game.  We would get to play in the NESCAC tournament, win the NESCAC tournament, and that was it.  Back to class.

Blech.

Twelve years ago, the Continentals won their first NCAA championship, dominating Franklin & Marshall in the finals of women’s lacrosse to take the trophy.  This happened because Hamilton moved at one point from the NESCAC conference to a conference called the Liberty League, which allowed its teams to participate in the NCAA tournaments.

And over the years, beginning in 1995, Hamilton’s basketball team has appeared in the NCAA men’s basketball tournaments … but only advanced a round or two before going home.  They’ve appeared in the tournament eleven times, including this year.  They’ve won their first two games in six of those matchups.

This year, though, I have faith in the Buff and Blue.

On Friday, the Continentals took apart Penn State-Behrend 72-70 to advance in the 64-team NCAA tournament.  Yeah, I’ve never heard of Penn State-Behrend either.  I don’t even know where Behrend is.  Or who Behrend is.  All I know is that they lost to the Continentals.  Buh-bye.

Last night, Hamilton faced their next opponent, Moravian.  I had to look them up on Wikipedia, that’s how much I know about Moravian.  Private liberal arts college in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  Yeah.  And when it was over, Peter Hoffman led the Continentals with 19 points en route to Hamilton’s 83-72 triumph over Moravian.  Thanks for visiting our campus, Moravian, don’t forget to stop at the bookstore and pick up your “My school played against Hamilton College and all I got was this lousy T-shirt” shirt.

So who does Hamilton pulverize next week?  I have no idea.  See, in Division III they re-set the seedings, so I don’t know who Hamilton is facing.

But i do know this.

Whichever team draws the short straw to face the Continentals, know that you’re going up against a team with a 25-4 record.  And we’re planning on going 26-4 on your sorry ass.

That’s right.  The Continentals are coming.  We’re taking the victory and taking your pride.

As I said before … Carissima, bitches.
