You know the picture. It’s when an exhausted basketball player sets a new record for most points or most rebounds or most something. They hold up a piece of paper that’s got a big number scribbled on it.
Last year, Lloyd Johnson tied the Albany Patroons’ franchise record for most points in a game, with 53. The record was originally set by TJ Thompson in a road game during the 2005-06 season.
And last night, at the Washington Avenue Armory, Edwin Ubiles snapped that record by scoring 55 points in a 135-112 win over the New York Court Kings.
Now how cool is that?
This is a great fulfillment for Ubiles – a star at Siena College, a big star in the Puerto Rico basketball league (BSN), and now in his second season with the Patroons, he holds the single-game record with 55 points.
He scored the final two points on free throws, which helped him clinch the mark. And this was against a New York Court Kings team that seemed to have the Patroons’ number of late. But they had a makeshift lineup, while the Patroons had some changes in their roster as well (including the return of EJ Gallup, who played for the Pats last year).
This is good. A nice win in front of a nice home crowd.
And Eddie now holds the record.
So the Patroons are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, and they face the Court Kings Monday at the Armory, with a tip-off at 7:00 p.m. Good seats are still available.
And you never know … maybe Eddie might surpass that 55-point mark on Monday.
