Making my son happy with a drag queen

My son Kris has continued his transition into the man he truly wants to be.  And although I had some initial reservations about it, I eventually agreed that this decision was in his best interest and best for what he wanted for his personal happiness.

On Wednesday, Kris underwent a much-needed surgical adjustment to truly transition into a man.  And he was nervous.  Trust me.  Millers get nervous over any type of surgery.  You know, I’m afraid I’ll go in for a colonoscopy and come out with Zaphod Beeblebrox’s head on my shoulder.  No, I’m not going to explain that reference to you, go pick up a freakin’ copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and improve your mind.

So anyway, I needed to do something for my son to lift his spirits post-surgery.

And… I decided that a custom video from one of his favorite TV stars might just work.

Kris loves the show RuPaul’s Drag Race, and several of the drag racers on the show are also part of the online stars-send-messages-for-customers website Cameo.  And one of the stars on the show is a person named Shangela.

Chuck Miller is not stupid.  Chuck Miller knows of Shangela.  More than just the RuPaul’s Drag Race show.  But … I need to do a little, shall we say, reconnaissance.

And this is when Chuck Miller “plays” stupid.

I contacted Kris and asked him about whether he knew about a show called RuPaul’s Drag Race.  And after asking him if it involved nitro-burning funny cars – you know, like in the commercial…

I asked if there was a person on the show named Shambala, or Sangria, or Shangri-La…

“Oh, you mean Shangela?  I love Shangela!”

Aces. And after telling Kris that I was working on a blog post about RuPaul’s Drag Race – and him telling me that I should not watch the first four seasons on the Logo channel because the lighting of those episodes was terrible – I said okay, and went on my way.

And by “on my way,” I meant on my way to the Cameo website to get a personalized message from Shangela to Kris.

I figured with Shangela’s busy schedule, I wouldn’t see a video for at least a week.

Three hours later … my e-mail beeped.  Shangela had recorded the video and I could pick it up at the Cameo website.

I put a link to the video message on Kris’s Facebook page that morning.  Remember, Kris lives in Washington State, so he’s still sleeping by the time I’ve posted this link.

Eventually, Kris woke up, he saw the message, and my cell phone lit up with text messages of “holy shit holy shit holy shit” over and over again.

Dad done good.

You want to see the Shangela video, don’t you?

Of COURSE you do.  It’s right there below.

By the way, from what I understand, Kris’ surgery went well.  I’m sure that the Shangela video put him in a peaceful mind throughout the surgery process.

Folks, this is what you do.  It doesn’t matter if your kid is putt’near 35 years old.  Kris is still my kid, and yeah Dad is going to do something nice for his son.

Besides, now I’m the “cool dad.”

Want proof?

Here’s proof.

I’m just saying… I’m the freakin’ cool dad now.

Yes, that is a smile on my face.
