They postponed the Iowa State Fair … and then, they postponed it all the way to 2021.
I kinda knew stuff like this was going to happen, even though I still had hope against hope that at least one or two different fairs would still have competitions. No matter. I’ll just save these photos for 2021.
Assuming that I don’t take another picture between now and 2021 …
But just for shits and giggles, these would have been my entries for the Iowa State Fair in 2020.
They would have received …
AFTER THE RAIN

This is one of only four pictures to ever earn me a “triple blue” – three blue ribbons in three separate competitions. I guess this will have to hold for another year.
FIVE TICKETS TO RIDE DAY AND NIGHT

My mixture of vintage Kodak Verichrome Pan (the black and white stuff) and Instamatic film (the color-shifted stuff) should – and I emphasize SHOULD – catch the judges’ eyes. I was going to enter this in the “Anything Goes” category, a spot where I pulled a blue two years ago.
BROKE DOWN ON MAGGIE’S FARM

Nothing like taking a rusting, vandalized old VW Super Beetle that had been painted up with Grateful Dead logos, and sending it into a photo competition. Yeah, this will work. I hope.
HIGH AND TIGHT
There’s a “Macro” category at the Iowa State Fair; however, their “macro” category does NOT want flower photos. So let’s break out a 60-year-old baseball and photograph the seams, shall we?
So these WOULD have been my entries. But now I have these photos, plus shots like The Pinecone and Double Feature Family Friendly and three or four other pictures I haven’t photographed yet. And those will have to go for 2021.
So Iowa’s toast. Durham’s toast. The New York State Fair is most likely toast. That would just leave Altamont and the Big E.
Oh yeah, and the Washington State Fair, which I entered digitally.
I’m pretty sure I said this before, but 2020’s going to be a really sucky Competition Season year for me.
But 2021 is going to be, if I pull this off, an overabundance of riches.
Chuck:
You can add the Washington County Fair to events being cancelled this year.

I did hear that. Also the Saratoga County Fair will not operate this year. I’m suspecting that if any fairs in NY operate (unless the Governor closes them all down due to COVID-19) is that they may not have insurance against not operating for a season.

Sounds like a sensible explanation to me.

The other issue with fairs is they may not have a midway because it won’t be worth hauling all the rides and bailing out all the carnys if there’s only a few fairs instead of the whole circuit.

I can’t help but think that the VW is bursting with the stories it has to tell.
